Rumors are starting to build about the possibility of a third Subaru WRX model being offered, one that splits the gap in terms of price between the current WRX and the STI. The current price gap between the WRX and STI has grown from what it was, and Subaru officials have pretty much admitted that there could be room for another model that falls somewhere in between the two. One rumor I heard not too long a go is that there may be an STI Limited offered, possibly as early as this summer as an '09 model. I would assume it would have a moonroof, the heated seat package, and possibly leather and standard NAV too...
The latest rumor, which is coming from the Subie Australian manager, Nick Senior, suggests maybe a super WRX of some sort. Again, I'm assuming a "super" WRX, as the word "WRX" was used by Senior. Although he also said it could be a stripped down, track-ready STIâbut not this year. So, who knows? My guess is we'll know something this summer, if not sooner as to what to expect.
âThere is the potential to do that [fill the price gap] and while we have looked at it thereâs not going to be one this year,â Subaru Australia exec Nick Senior told Drive. âThere is the potential to do one in 2009 and thereâs also factory limited editions in the future as well.â
Finally, keep in mind that Senior was speaking about the Australian market, not ours or other worldwide markets. Still, where there's smoke...

I say go for it. I'd probably line right up if it can with heated seats. a price under 30k. and ethier a cvt or a 5sp/6spd auto. OR the stick with a better center diff. The stick is still stuck with the 50/50 power split, where as the auto can tranfer power forward and back. (or as far as I have read)

I will suggest a WRX ST 245 hp+/- 6 spd., a better suspension set and some additional tuner equipment. Another option for the masses is an Impreza Sport NA engine with the suspension of the WRX.

I dunno, does this car really need a 4th powertrain? Think about it.
I think a Limited package for the WRX and STI will be plenty.
Keep in mind they're selling every STI they can build right now.
