Subaru to bring diesel to US by mid 2010

The new 2.0L turbo diesel is just starting to trickle into Europe, and now there is word that Subaru will bring that engine Stateside sometime during 2010.

Actually it should be noted that it's still not entirely clear if they mean it will be here during the year of 2010, or for the 2010 model year. In either case, it's coming, and that's good news.

Initial reports (here , here and here ) have been very positive about this engine...
It's very quiet and refined, as well as being reasonably powerful. So, being a Subie fan, I view this as exciting news. I would expect to see it in the Forester, for sure, with even possibly the Impreza getting it too. Beyond that, who knows?

“We are preparing to launch the engine when the market is ready,” says FHI president Ikuo Mori, “We have no comment on when that would be. The European market is ready now; I’m not sure when the US market will be.”

Full story here and here.

Any idea about the power/torque numbers from this engine ? I don't find that in the article.

Also, as per the article, it appears to be mid-year 2010, rather than model year 2010.

Think it's about 150 hp/250 torque.

I'd buy today if it were available in the US with an automatic. Maybe even 2... one upscale-trim Legacy sedan and one Outback or Forester. Great economy, good power, great safety, great AWD, and a range around 600 miles.

To be more specific (from the first article):

148 bhp at 3600 rpm
Max torque 258 lb ft at 1800 rpm

And by the way, combined MPG: 49.6

Put it in a Forester. I'll take two.

50 mpg sounds like heaven.

That 50 miles per gallon number sounds nice, but there are a couple things to consider: 1) imperial (UK) gallons differ from standard (US) gallons, 2) UK fuel consumption testing is different from US testing. 49.6 miles per gallon in imperial gallons is equivalent to 41.3 miles per gallon in standard gallons.

If it's even close to 40 to 49 mpg, I'd be happy. That's almost twice the mileage of my Legacy and almost twice the torque.

Impressive.

Legacy 2.0 turbodiesel mileage converted to US gallons:

City: 7 liters/100 km = 33.6 MPG
Highway: 4.8 liters/100 km = 49 MPG
Combined: 5.6 liters/100 km = 42 MPG

Those numbers look good, but as pointed out, the testing cycles used to obtain the UK city/hwy numbers are also different. You'd really need to retest them under our standards to compare fairly against other US vehicles.

09 Subaru Outback Boxer Diesel: Saw and heard one run in Frankfurt a few weeks ago. Quiet, responsive and didn't smell even the slightest bit of emissions coming from the tailpipe. It was equipped with a 5 speed manual.

If it does come to the USA make mine a 5 or 6 speed manual Impreza (perhaps Forester). I'd order it now if I could. Lets just hope that it is available in both ENTRY level models as well as the high end. Many of the other companies offering diesels in the US only like to put diesel in the upscale models, and then wonder why the diesels don't sell better. If I could afford the top of the line VW Toureg, Mercedes, etc, I don't think MPG would matter as much.

I'm sure an automatic will be available if it is brought to the USA... To many Americans are either too lazy or lack driving skills to only offer a manual transmission. In my opinion it should absolutly be offered in both transmissions.

Imperial vs US gallon... either way it gets very good mpg for an AWD vehicle

My 2008 Outback was almost traded in for the VW Jetta TDI sportwagen but I just know I'll end up missing the extreme reliability of the Subaru. Bring on the boxer diesel and you'll have an immediate purchase here!

The VW TDI's are selling very well as they are the only diesel option that the rest of us can afford. Subaru can't do this fast enough.

Any confirmation of this engine for the USA this year (2010)?

Not happening anytime soon. See below (just received this response today)

Thank you for your e-mail to Subaru of America, Inc. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us with your feedback.

First, please be advised that we have received many other contacts similar to yours so you will find that the statements below are the same as I have provided to other customers seeking a diesel Subaru.

Our chairman Ikuo Mori was actually misquoted by reporters when he originally stated that Subaru would bring our diesel to the US in 2010. He had meant in the 2010(s). Since that time there have been many re-interpretations of this statement posted to various blogs throughout the Internet.

Further complicating the issue is that the original statement of plans to bring the diesel stateside was made in 2008 after we launched vehicles in Europe but before the drop in the economy in the Fall of 2008. Subaru as well as every other company had to re-organize in the wake of this volatile market and consequently any future plans have gone under re-examination.

At this time, we have not been made aware of any set plans as to when we will offer diesel models stateside since these past events and statements.

Please know that I am a proponent of clean and bio-diesel and I too am eagerly awaiting any news.

If you wish for this product to be offered please make sure to encourage others who share your interest to contact us, as past input from our customers has been helpful in initiating changes to our newer models.

Should any decisions be made as it relates to offering such a vehicle stateside, you will among the first notified.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service.

Best wishes,

Kerry Ann Miller

I was going to buy a Forester this week, but now I will wait for a diesel. Bring it soon!

Look out. I and many other VW TDI Diesel owners are getting burned by the dreaded HPFP issue (search google). My TDI SportWagen has 24k miles, and died last week on the road. Towed to VW and will cost 7k to replace clean and replace the entire fuel system due to metal shavings that the dealer claims happened when gasoline was introduced into the tank. Dealer claims this is not covered by warranty. I assume if this is correct, it was contamination at the fuel station tanks since I am very careful to purchase only "branded" fuel. Currently seeking legal assistance and selling as soon as possible. The US is NOT ready for diesel autos.

Is there any update on the turbo diesel being made available in the US? I am looking forward to purchasing a new Diesel Outback.
