First Drive: 2009 Subaru Forester

Subaru has redesigned the Forester, transforming it from a likable wagon to a crossover ute.

It has more space and more power. Two engine options offer a 224-horsepower turbo or a 170-hp normally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder.

Do you like it better than the car it replaces?

I find it hard to believe the new JDM Subaru Forester XT can go 0-60 mph (or 0-62 mph if they're measuring 0-100 kph) in 5.5 seconds. The JDM Subaru Impreza S-GT with the same engine can't even rip off an acceleration run that quick. Plus, the Subaru Forester XT will not be available with a manual transmission (at least not in the U.S./North America). :(

I like the 2004-2007 Forester because it could go like stink and looked more aggressive. With that said, the new Forester is probably a better overall vehicle.

The article says a 5-speed auto will probably come in another year. I think Subaru's continuously-variable transmission (CVT) will probably be used instead of the 5AT. Subaru officially stated last year that they were focusing on CVT development instead of developing their automatic transmissions.

I've always liked the Forester well enough but hadn't really thought about it for my next car purchase until I saw this review. Dispute 0-60 times aside, I'm almost sold already. A little sport, plenty of utility, nice interior. Seems like a great package. Now we'll just have to see if I can comfortably fit my 6'4" self into the driver's seat.

CU had commented the older Forester's seats weren't all that comfortable. Hopefully this new one's better "seated". Otherwise, sounds like a huge improvement over the current Forester.

Makes one wonder about the Outback, which by comparison appears slower, uses more fuel, is tail happy in handling and has less low end torque.

No way short of a $10,000 engine overhaul and more $$$ for a gearbox replacement will the forester do 0-100 in 5.5 seconds. Pure fantasy from subaru.
After 2 years of trying not a single tuner has even come close to 6 seconds. The 'new" subaru 5 speed cvt is still 5 years behind most every other manufacturer.
Even then if you spent the big $$$ to get the performance the suspension and wheel / tyre combination would require replacing at considerable additional cost. why bother?
