It's the world's first boxer diesel.
Subaru introduces its first diesel engine, a 148-horsepower turbocharged boxer-4. It will be sold in Europe in the Legacy Turbo Diesel.
Do you want it to come to America?

Ironic that a car that would be great for the enviroment is being blocked by enviromental rules.
Fingers crossed it arrives next year.

60.5 mpg?! Any idea what you achieved in your actual driving?
If a car this size can get in the 40s, then I'm sold.

Since they were in Europe, it's likely Imperial gallons instead of US gallons....5 qts rather the 4 qts.
In US gallons, it would be about 48 mpg. Still impresive for a car of this size and about twice what my Legacy gets.

Actually, it's 1.201 US gallons per Imperial gallons, so it's not the 5 qt/4 qt = 1.25 ratio.

Do you smell that?
No, it's not what The Rock is cooking. It's potential! :o)

Given its better low end torque and mileage, the Subaru Diesel sounds like a real winner.
Wish I could wait 2 more years, but will probably have to go with one of their other models (too darn much snow and ice to ignore around here).

LOL, Suby...
I'm already tired of reading about how these new diesels are coming stateside...eventually. I want them here NOW!

I second that.

I think it is great that Subaru is expressing an intrest in trying to bring the diesel to the US. If it does come to the US, and I hope they sell a lot of them. I would be interested in an Impreza diesel. As far as companies that don't make an effort to offer Americans what the rest of the world has, to the bottom of the wish list for them.

They couldn't sell it in 49 states, a few others states in the NE also follow CARB standards.
So Subaru would be shut out of New England, where it has the most market share.
Think about it.
They won't bring it as is. They need to add the particulate filter (and about $1500 to the cost).
So next year, no, but maybe in 3 years or so.

I don't think anyone expects to see a Subie diesel here before MY 2010, which is enough time to get it 50-state legal.

Montana is a big purchaser of Subies. Granted, there's more sheep than people...

The answer to the article question: Yes, very much so.
I had heard 2010, but if it's MY 2010 (doesn't that mean summer 2009?) Then I'm so saving for this one.
As long as they put it in an Outback, that is. The Impreza is too small for my 6'6" (maybe the newer one not so much) and I'd rather not have to buy a SUV.

has anyone travelling to Europe thought that european cities ,where about half of small cars are diesel, have dirtier air than here?Try and buy a low mileage 06 used jetta diesel, and you will see it sells higher then a new one.Beats me why I can't buy a small diesel like my father-in-law 02 ford focus wagon ,with a 100 hp engine and 65 miles per gallon average.
I am holding to my 99 manual accord until I can buy either a subi or honda(hopefully Fit)diesel.

I would--literally--buy it now. I've had Subaru cars and they are incredibly well made, safe and...get not so hot mileage. I need to replace my current Legacy, but I'm going to wait until some kind of diesel, Subaru or not, is available that I can afford (which rules out the Mercedes). Having driven diesels in Europe, I'm sold.
The problem isn't just environmental restrictions (although clearly that is one of the issues) it's also non-leaders like Bob Lutz who just this week went on a rant about how GM would never import a diesel in a speech riddled with factual errors like the difference between Gas and Diesel taxes, MPG differences, etc.

Hope Suby does it.
Someone explain to Opt that California's emissions laws are followed by over 1/5 of the states in the union. :)

Now they are saying wait till 2012?? That's the same as never. Wait, wait, wait, means NOT GONNA HAPPEN! So no diesel Jetta, no diesel accord,...All we get is a butt ugly prius?????? I wish somebody would steal the boxer diesel from the auto show. Then again we could steal lots of them. Lets organize a party and hijack the boat taking them to europe. Instead of waiting around and whining " Please , Please, Mr. can I buy one? Please?" Lets organize an expedition and commit piracy. I'm sure it would be cheaper too. If we get caught we'll used the green peace excuse and say we did it to help save the planet.
. .One thing is certain. NOTHING is going to be allowed to interupt oil refineries profits while bush is in the white house.
