Detroit Auto Show Preview: Two new 50-state diesel models from BMW

BMW will introduce two new 50-state certified 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo diesels at the Detroit Auto Show: the new X5 xDrive35d and the 335d.

Being BMWs, these will be sporting engines that put out 235 horsepower, yet at the same time are clean enough to be sold throughout the USA. In order to do so BMW uses SCR technology to reduce nitric oxides (NOX), enabling nationwide introduction of BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance as a 50-state model (BIN5).

The engines use variable twin turbo technology...
At low rpms a small turbo kicks in, and as engine speed rises, a second larger turbo goes into action, thereby offering excellent power throughout the rev range with virtually no turbo lag. Maximum torque is is 425 lb-ft, and that occurs at 1,750 rpm.

BMW claims that there is a 25 percent fuel savings with these new diesels over comparable gas models.

EPA estimates of 23/33 for the 335d, sound a bit disappointing. I hope that BMW eventually (sooner, rather than later) brings over the 123d, which performs well and gets great gas mileage (45+ mpg).

The hp is adequate, but the torque is tremendous, even for a diesel. I was expecting low to mid 300's. Wow. And yes, the mileage is meager. The problem is, more power sells better than higher mileage.

Think about this:
CAFE charges $5 per vehicle per .1 mpg under the standard (27 currently). If BMW can charge $3K over the competition for worse mileage than the competition, they're still making a profit.

The Benz was 27/37, IIRC, but that was before the EPA adjusted numbers down. How does it compare now?

It's easy to beat the new EPA highway ratings, especially in a non-sporting vehicle like a truck or SUV because when you're cruising on the highway you're not sticking your foot in the throttle. Those people who claim to get 30 mpg with their C6 Corvettes? They're getting 27-28 on a regular basis and probably do get 30 when the conditions are right. But even if the EPA estimates were exact, 25 mpg from a truck with 425 lb-ft of torque is fantastic. BMW has done a great job.
