Anyone who's spent any time driving in and about New York knows it about as much fun as having a root canal. So it's no wonder that a developer is proposing another tunnel, but this time connecting Long Island with Westchester County in an effort to help alleviate traffic.
However, upon looking at this map of the proposed route, all I can say is: Huh? I've always thought that the shortest distance between two points, in this case point "A" and point "B," is a straight line...
Full story here.
UPDATE: Thanks to quick-thinking poster tryan, who noted that the above map, which is in the link, is incorrect, or at least misleading. Here's the "correct" mapand this now makes sense. Hard to believe, but this correct image was tough to find. Either that or my Google skills are lacking...
So, the map above is what you would now drive, if you were going from "A" to "B." Yes, the tunnel makes sense.

The answer to your quandary? In short, they messed up. All it takes is a little googling - google maps to be precise - to show you:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=Oyster+Bay,+NY&daddr=Rye,+NY&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=26.812565,57.568359&ie=UTF8&z=10&om=0
The route in that picture is the current route you would take to drive TODAY, not the proposed route. It uses the Throg's Neck Bridge to cross over the water.

Good detective work! :)

I bet it would get a TON of use. Everyone from Long Island going north (towards New England) would use it.
That road would be well utilized the first day it opened.

What are the chances it will actually be built? I'd say about nil.

Thanks for the credit in the article...=)
As a former resident of the east end of Long Island (where my folks still live) and a current resident of southeast CT, I have traveled from CT to LI and vice-versa a number of times on the ferries (both Port Jeff and Orient Point) and while this tunnel would be nice, it might be a bit far west for my use - and others travelling from the east of Long Island to points northeast in New England - especially during rush hour.
It's important to note that this is just the most recent in a number of proposals to build a driveable connector between LI and CT, starting way back with Robert Moses' original proposition to build a bridge across the Long Island Sound.
