GM has been testing Chevy Camaro prototypes in various places around the world. Now these latest photos from Australia give the best close-up views yet of the new sporty car.
It might at first seem odd to find the Camaro being tested in Australia, but that is because GMâs Australian arm, Holden, is leading the development work on the Camaro. The new Camaro is based on GMâs global rear-drive architecture, which also underpinâs Holdenâs VE Commodore range of cars.
Naturally the new Camaro will stick with rear-wheel drive, and may even have independent rear suspension as shown on the Camaro concept car. Engine offerings will include a powerful V8, but will have a cylinder shutdown system for improved fuel mileage.
The car is getting very close to production-ready and is expected to go on sale in the States sometime in early 2009. A convertible version is expected to follow about a year later...

So is the new Camaro in the "land down under" or SoCal? Or both?

I don't doubt they're in Oz, Bob. I'm just wondering if the photos are of the same prototype or different ones.

A few things:
The Camaro will be built on the Zeta platform, so it will have IRS. That is confirmed.
AFM, on the other hand, has not been confirmed.

Oh, and the ones in So Cal appeared to have a white paint job with black camo, while these look to have a black paint job with white camo. The yellow outboard taillamps are different than what we've seen on GM's official pics.

This one is definently in Australia, as the trailer has Victorian license plates

Will GM do the Nissan GT-R trick with this one; limit production, then let the Chevy dealers charge $20-50K over MSRP?

I think probably not. While that is a possibility, I think GM's strategy is to spread Zeta's cost over large numbers, so they'll want to go for large volume rather than trying to make their dealers happy with limited production. Both strategies have some merit from a business perspective, but my hunch is GM will go with the former. I could be wrong though.

Im glad to see the new Camaro finally got the proportions it deserved. The Fbody cars had that enormous beak, odd low seating position, extremely high cowl which certainly ruined the driving experience. The overall packaging was a complete joke.
Hopefully the new cars chassis dynamics will match or exceed the engines output.
