2008 New York Auto Show Preview: GMC (thanks to Holden) Ute

Not sure if this image is the real deal or just a Photoshop effort, but either way, it gives you a pretty good idea as to what to expect. It's a Holden Crewman Ute, that has been GMC-ized. The concept will be on display at the New York Auto Show, so says GM's Bob Lutz.

“It is very tough looking, with a sport-utility look that is very low, very aggressive looking, a blend between a sport utility and the classic Australian four-door Ute,” states Lutz...
I suspect, that if such a project gets green-lighted, that the finished vehicle may actually have some real-world work capability. The reason being is the impending tough fuel regulations. That means smaller, more efficient vehicles of all sorts, including trucks. If GMC can convince buyers that a vehicle like this could indeed do some of the tasks that a 1/2-ton Sierra can do, maybe some of those folks will end up buying these instead.

The rims and color make it look like a Cadillac.

I would like to see these come back. The Caminos/Rancheros were really a brilliant idea.

Wow, those ute sure look weird with four doors.

I'm guessing the model above is going to be the Denali version, that explains the blingy rims and fancy grille.

Crew cab Conquista? Single cab will be fine but the crewcab is ugly. Remind me those funky chop station wagons!

I don't see this replacing full size trucks in a million years. As a matter of fact I don't see anything replacing full size trucks in a million years. Some guys (and gals) are just truck folks, and this is not a truck, it's nothing but a convertible wagon. Most truck owners that I know have trucks not only because of the cargo capacity, but also because of the off-road capability and the tough looks, which this thing offers neither. I have nothing against bringing back the El Camino and Ranchero type vehicles, but don't think for a second that they will ever replace 1/2 ton, real trucks.

Looks long and ungainly... Try and steer that puppy around a parking lot and see how many curbs you go over. It would work as a limo with a room for a spa though...

Picture is fake. Those are the optional 20" rims from a Yukon Denali. They are 6 lug so they wouldn't be installed on this car.

growing up in sydney as a kid, my neighbors had utes. most of them were very practical for their activities of home improvement and brick transportation. they used utes because of the lack of quality pick up trucks available.

however, in the states i see people using utes more as image vehicles than anything else. also, with the next generation ridgeline and potential entrance of toyota with their A-BAT concept, i believe this ute will have a very limited appeal once it's novelty runs out.
