2008 Consumer Electronics Show: Hughes Telematics

The competition for OnStar type services is really heating up. Ford's Sync system has already added features like accident notificaiton and remote diagnostics. Now, Hughes Telematics is confirming details of their system which will be included on many 2009 Mercedes Benz vehicles.

The Hughes system is by far the most comprehensive and includes these features: emergency crash notification, hands free calling, maintenance reminders, recall notification, red light camera alerts, roadside assistance, real time traffic, remote emissions reporting, stolen vehicle locator, turn by turn directions, vehicle tracking, plus news, weather, gas and streaming media...

And that’s only a partial listing of what the system can do.

Connected - that's the new buzz word - Brian Moody, Road Test Editor.

Pretty soon the car will just drive itself to the dealer when it needs something fixed.

What'll it be today, Mr. Benz?

Oh, some oil, and maybe some new wipers.

This is among the very exciting features that Mercedes will be able to offer. The wireless diagnostics that Hughes system will boast of is cool! Imagine if we can easily avoid being stuck in a traffic as the system can help you find the best route to your destination. Now road rage due to traffic will be minimized as well. I may have the best MSD pro-billet distributor in my vehicle but that is nothing compared to having this kind of gadget installed on my ride.
