Starting in 2011, and going into full effect by 2020, new regulations regarding vehicle fuel mileage go into effect. This means a 50 percent gain in fuel mileage (35 mpg) must be achieved by 2020. Expect this to have a dramatic effect in terms of what we will be driving. I think it's safe to assume we will be seeing more hybrids, more diesels, and more of every other type of eco-friendly vehicle on dealer lots...
It's believed, that once passed the Senate, this bill be approved by the House and the President. So, it looks to be a done-deal, unless something unexpected crops up between now and then.

Some people would prefer to have their 400 HP guzzlers, with a row of seats for every child even if the deserts fill with American blood protecting their precious right to cheap gas.
Tough. Get used to it.

Wow, I love how all the autorags are poo-pooing CAFE as if the automakers will have a hard time achieving these goals. Apparently they all forgot that the automakers said they couldn't add catalytic converters either as it would add too much to the price and ruin performance. Strangely, catalytic converters rarely come up now and all non-diesel cars manage to be 50 state legal.

CAFE will be more expensive for some companies than others. Honda will hardly have to drop a dime, whereas Chrysler is likely to enter bankruptcy before they can meet these standards.
Regardless of cost, all companies are going to use this as an excuse to expand their respective contribution margins (ie, increase prices).

I think I read Honda was actually for the CAFE....Im not sure though..

Sure, when Honda already has the highest CAFE numbers, it'll affect everyone else more than it will affect them. Makes sense, they're already good at that, force others to do the same.
I guess Chrysler will have to answer No to "That Thing got a Hemi" in 2020.

That is if Chrysler is even around then.
