Swedish car site Auto Motor Sport Sweden
(here
) is reporting that the Volvo XC90 replacement has just been canceled. There are several reasons such as increased costs in developing lightweight components, but the big one is that Volvo does not have an eco-friendly enough powertrain (hybrids, etc.) to power this vehicle. So instead Volvo will concentrate on smaller SUVs, such as the XC60, a smaller still XC50, and perhaps even an XC30.

UPDATE: Not true, so says Volvo. Apparently that story that was run by Auto Motor and Sport Sweden yesterday was incorrect. Full story here.

That's a shame as the current XC90 is still one of the best looking utes out there. I can understand the mileage concerns though, they over-engineer the hell out it making it really, really heavy...
The XC60 looks promising but an XC50 AND an XC30 seems a bit redundant.

Even so, I hope the next XC-90 does not look like the above posted vehicle... It looks like a C30 on stilts.
If Volvo needs a platform for the next XC90, I think the Mazda CX-9 is a great starting point. Add Volvo's Hardware, face, features, safety, interior design, engines, And thats still a nice vehicle!! Especially considering the CX-9 is the CAR&DRIVER SUV of the Year!

That's not a bad starting point. Box off the rear end and it'll even address complaints about a small 3rd row seat.
