Hypermiler builds 95 mpg aero-Civic

Backyard genius is alive and well!

A guy who goes by the screen name of "basjoos" has modified his '92 Honda Civic to achieve 95 mpg at 65 mph, or so he claims. It should be noted that basjoos is also a hypermiler, which is someone who goes to extraordinary lengths to get the best possible fuel mileage from their vehicle.

So do you think it was worth the effort? Would you want to drive this, or something like this, just so you can say: "Screw you OPEC!"?

Nice. Are these kinds of mods street legal, since there's no assurance they won't fall off and hit another car?

But of course it won't meet modern safety and pollution standards, a 1992 vehicle. Today's emission standards are 1/7th of what was allowed in 1992. so even at 95 mpg, it's polluting more than a modern car.

I think "claims" is the key word here. The crudeness of it suggests the aerodynamics are likely worse then stock.

As for screwing OPEC, last time I heard less then 20% of the oil used in the states comes from OPEC. Most comes from the US, Canada, Mexico and South America.

And for the price, OPEC has very little influence on it anymore. Speculators control the market, driving the price up and down with every world event and change in inventory levels.

Here's the oil import list.

The following are OPEC countries:
2. Saudi Arabia
4. Venezuela
5. Nigeria
6. Iraq
7. Angola
8. Ecuador
9. Algeria
13. Kuwait
15. Libya

Too complicated. Just pay your $3.00/gallon and drive drive drive!

Although Im a big fan of good fuel efficiency I have other ideas for this EG Civic hatch. Integra Type R drivetrain and suspension components would do wonders for this car and still achieve 30+mpg. =)

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

10 years ago, $3.00/gallon would have been an inconceivable amount of money.

Take all that stuff off and I bet it would handle a lot better. LOL
