BMW to replace iDrive with an Apple-designed unit?

Whoa! Talk about doing a 180!

Gizmodo.com
is reporting that BMW may replace their user-hideous iDrive interface with one from AppleĀ—a company known for making some of the most user-friendly products on the planet. If this happens, I would expect complete integration with current Apple products...
As a long-time Mac user, I really look forward to this happening. Let's just hope this rumor pans out.

Pretty good photoshop, but the uneven placement of the Ipod touch pads gives it away.

Not that I don't think it's an interesting proposition - I do, and I'm sure it would be multiple times more intuitive than the current I-Drive.

Excellent! And I agree with Tryan above. Can we get that?

I manage software development projects and nothing bothers me more about software development than having to always develop for the lowest common denominator. BMW's iDrive is easy to use; but the software requires patience, a memory and critical thinking skills. Sadly most consumers lack all of these things. Judging by car reviews, apparently most car reviewers do too.

FWIW, Apple's software is wonderful and any car company would be lucky to have the Cupertino folks contributing to a car-based GUI.

I would take back all the bad things I said about iDrive if BMW made this brilliant move...

I honestly do not understand the hostility to I Drive. Upon delivery of my Bimmer, I just sat there for a few minutes (w/o owner's manual cuz that's how I roll), twiddled the knob, pushed some buttons and figured it out.
What exactly is the issue here?

I dunno desmo. When i sat in one of the showroom cars at a BMW dealership, I figured it out. I tried it again at the M.I.A.(Miami International Autoshow)and saw some tweaks but I still got it. There is a learning curve but its worth it once you get it. But then again, I figure out Electronics easily so maybe I picked it up faster than most.

Isn't that one of the special edition 1series in the back? I think it was a 135tii ir something to that effect with a 1 and tii. I remeber it because the tac is white because BMW wants the driver notice it 1st. I think the rest of the interior was also Black and White...

So does that mean BMW's will cost an even greater amount than they're worth now? Will the car be locked off to all aftermarket upgrades? Will you be threatened with the full fury of Apple's legal department now that you posted this story instead of letting Jobs deliver it to his coolaid drinkers at one of their cult meetings? Will updates take twice as long to download and work only half the time if you're using a real computer?
