The new 2008 Evo 5-speed, the GSR model, will begin at $34K. The top-of-the-line MR model, with the 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (Twin Clutch-Sequential Sportshift (TC-SST)) will start at $39K. This is a rather healthy jump over the outgoing model's MSRP, which ranged from $28,679 to $35,189.
Expensive, yes; but right in line with what Subaru is asking fro their new STI...

wow 5k for the dsg box. makes the gti with it seem down right CHEAP.
sti is square in the middle. I have a feeling the dsg box will make the evo have a slight edge over the sti.
but the 6spd sti will beat that old school 5spd.
ethier way. both have entered very expensive land.
i'd be tempted by bmw at this price range. as well as by the cts. and probably some lexus cars.
ack, its all Bang now. Alot of bang, but still

Dang, hot rod econo boxes priced like premium quality cars.
The market for these things tends to be doods in their 20s. $35-$40k for one of these seems to be out of the reach of most of them.
We'll see how this pricing pans out.

I wouldn't call STI and Evo econo box hot rods, how often do you see them on the road? Not that often in my area and I live in LA. I can see that the Civic Si and Mazdaspeed3 will replace those two as the next hotness for the younger crowd with the prices went up to the roof.

Man, the Mistu looks so pretty after spending so much time trying to like the looks of the new STI.
edit: That blue is definitely the cure for the common color!

Brian, that blue is a knock-off of Subaru's World Rally Blue! j/k
STI FTW (for the win)!!!

I wonder how much of the price gain is the plummeting US dollar.

Live in so cal too and I see STIs and Evos constantly. Not as much as M3s and 911s but still very often.
Regardless, the pricing is insane. This essentially means the STi is the better deal. Also makes the 135i seem like a bargain.

Perhaps Mistu and Subie know people want these cars ___real bad___, and will pay a premium for them? It'll also be interesting to see what ADM's go along with them.
And perhaps this is an indication of how Subie and Mistu prices will increase in '09?

These cars used to be some of the best values in the "go fast" segment. For not much more money, you could also buy a: Lotus Elise (46k), BMW 335i (38k) or a Lexus IS350 (36k), which are all fast sporty cars, and IMHO, I would rather have one of them.
opfreak says:

i know why some will call them ecno boxes, its because a base imperza starts at 17k. and these 2 cars used to be target cars for high perfomace and afforadable. but the price didnt just go up, it shot up. when you are hitting 3 series prices, and very well equiped, cts prices, you just priced yourself out of a large fan base

Mitsubishi is crazy, they are not gonna sell any Evos with these prices. I was considering getting an Evo X in 2 years or so but now i have to think twice. 31-32k for the GSR would be more reasonable.

Still looks better than the STi although STi is much closer than the base Impreza and WRX. Still, after owning a Scoobydoo, it'll be difficult making the switch, these are fantastic cars for the $$$.

In Los Angeles, Mitsu and Subie will sell every one of these "boy racers" they bring in (they are very common in S. Calif). Elsewhere, who knows?
desmolicious says:

I don't think the exchange rate can be blamed for these high prices per se, as then all the models in the range would be affected. But the base models still cost about the same as before, starting at $17K. Nope, Mitsu and Subie are just seeing how far they can push it...
Here's the big problem, those near $40K models still have essentially the same crappy interior as the base models. Once they are lined up against other makes eg BMW/Lexus for the same money, and people see how nice those interiors are, then it's going to be a really tough sell. Sure you can keep saying World Rally Car until you are Subaru blue in your face, but the fact of the matter is that the beauty of those cars was their value combined with their speed. They used to be giant slayers. At $36-$40K they are no more.
A $5k body kit is now going to make a $17K Mitsu look like a $40K Mitsu...
firstwagon says:

I don't agree. They are holding the base model prices low to keep market share. The reality is any car that is not made in the US is going up in price. It's just a matter of when the price is pasted on to the consumer.
Why would anyone be stupid enough to pay $5K for a body kit to make their Mitsu "look" like an EVO? Rally cars were never about the looks (they are all rather ugly), it's about the hardware. Incredible engines, 4wd systems and abilities are what made these cars great.
desmolicious says:

I see cars with body kits but no extra performance upgrades rolling down the streets all the time in LA.
For these peeps, it's all about the look. If they can't have the "real" thing, at least they have the look.
Personally, it ain't my bag.
