Looks like the Hyundai enthusiasts over at www.newtiburon.com have acquired some photos of what looks like the production version of the Hyundai Genesis coupe. The concept version will be shown next week at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show , but who cares about the concept when you can see the real thing?
According to the post, the information and photos were gleaned from a marketing presentation several months ago which seems plausible given the Mustang coupe on hand for comparison. They were told there would be two engines: a 2.0-liter 215hp turbo four-cylinder and a 300hp 3.8-liter V6...

Well, they got the proportions right, but went a smidge overboard with the details. And a 4-cylinder? Eh.
The rear of the car, though, from about the rear tire back, is masterful. That's the rear-end the G37, G6 Coupe, and Altima Coupe all wish they had.

No b-pillar? or just masked?
I dont know what to think. Its nice, but werid at the same time. I'd have to see it in real life.

What's with the dip in the rear side window? Thats kinda odd. As for the rest of it...It's a fine looking car but not a great looking car. It doesn't seem to have the muscular face of the 'Stang, and it doesn't have the curves of a G37 either.

I've been looking forward to this car for months, but Sabastian is right, that droopy side window is a huge turn-off...possibly a deal-breaker. The rest of the car looks sensational.

Well, the rear quarter window aids a little in extra visibility. I don't mind it.

Yup, droop in rear window hurts what is otherwise pretty impressive styling. Engine options are less so. Maybe that can compete with the current Mustang, but it doesn't have a prayer against what is expected for the Camaro and next Mustang.

This is very nice! I hope Hyundai brings back a rally program!

Baby got back...and nothing else.
They can always put in that new V8 down the line if necessary to better compete with other manufacturers, but damn, that thing is awkward-looking. The front end reminds me of the Camry Solara, which isn't a good thing.

It may turn you all off, but I think it looks fantastic. That's the perfect evolution of the Tiburon. It's got Nissan front end styling, Mazda side styling, and a very unique (and classy I might add) rear. The sheetmetal is tawt and purposeful, not bland and overtly bulbous like most cars these days.
Is it a hatchback?

I like it. It's not trying to be American or European. It's being Asian. I'm not sure if there really is a droop on the rear window or if it's just the effect it gives when the body widens in the rear. At any rate, at least no one will complain about blindspots on it. Oh, BTW I think it's just a hidden b-pillar, but it does look like a frameless front window.

But what does it weigh? If the weight is right, with a good manual 6 speed, then that turbo 4 would be enough. If the price really came in at 20K and it didn't weigh too much more than a GTI, it could be a very nice car.
hondacura4 says:

Roar, nothing wrong with the 4 as it would be a base engine. 215hp turbo four (should be fairly torquey) in a sporty RWD chassis sounds fun to me. Mustang has a big V6 as the base but the numbers it spits out arent impressive given its displacement.
Crowb, being that it shares its platform with a mid sized luxury sedan I wouldnt look for it to be a feather weight.
Honda, are you watching?

Mustangs 4.0 puts out 210 hp while this Tiburon puts out 300 out of a 3.8 V6, not that shabby for a Hyundai!

This is hot.
Looks like a Lexus ES / Altima coupe meld.
Thumbs up.
Hope it drives as well.

"Mustangs 4.0 puts out 210 hp while this Tiburon puts out 300 out of a 3.8 V6, not that shabby for a Hyundai!"
Yeah, but what do the power curves look like? Those are just as important, if not more so, than the peak numbers.
hondacura4 says:

Youre right Stov BUT 300hp is much more than 210 Im betting the overall torque curve is in Hyundais favor because of the CVVT. Im betting the "new" 3.8 will have more peak torque and a broader torque curve than the 4.0.
Current peak numbers:
Hyundai 3.8 24v V6 263HP @ 6000/ 257lbft @ 4500
Ford 4.0 OHV 12v V6 210hp @ 5250 / 240lbft @ 3500
Although peak numbers @ a given RPM can only give you a hint about an engines overall curve Im still betting the "new" Hyundai V6 will have an advantage over the 4.0L Ford V6. The Ford delivers its peak earlier in the range but given the number advatange the Hyundai has Im sure its matching or exceeding the Ford at its peak. I know its more expensive, but maybe Ford should offer its nice 24v 3.5 as a base?
Mikemir47, since the 4.0 V6 is the Fords base engine shouldnt the comparison be between the Hyundai 2.0 turbo and the Ford 4.0 V6?
Werent their rumors of a possible optional V8 in this car also?

Shock! Are they sure this is the Tiburon? They are so different. The Tib is like a sports car. This is like a luxury large sport coupe. Infinity should be running scared! Bimmer should keep an eye out. But that window dip is killing me. It's like you think you can ignore it, but you just can't! That won't make production (let's pray!).
What's all this about this coupe versus the Mustang. No. They are two totally different cars. Do they put the Infinity G37 up against a Mustang? It's like that.
Congrats Hyundai- this is a real winner. You guys could eventually be luxury. But it will take a lot of hits like this.

Hyundai is the next toyota...5 years from now they'll have luxury cars stealing sales like crazy from Acura, Infiniti and Lexus.

This car can be a winner for the Hyundai in an almost non-existent segment (Well, at least for the price range quoted). Should they incorporate their ability to manufacture it with similar quality of their other vehicles (Why wouldn't they?), consumers will have a good bargain! I personally would love to have a turbo four RWD for around 20k... I don't even see the base mustang LX as a competitor (have you ever driven one of those piles?!?!). And a 300HP V6 is really just a bit shy in power compared to many V8s. As for the styling, I can only comment on the side profile, which seems to take some cues from the G6 coupe, and the Toyota Solara, though any creases and wedges are much more pronounced, which to me translates to an appearance of higher quality design (I'm thinking BMW/Infinity). The "drooping" window in my opinion is kind of slick- definitely unique. The fairly extreme top down angle of the picture might also distort the look of it a bit.. All I can say is I got to see it in person. I really wish there was a front, and rear shot.. Guess I just got to wait. However, from what I can see of the rear, the tail light which comes forward, angled upwards, reminds of the Acura RL. That friggin silver, and those rims really remind me of a G6.. At any rate, if the front, and rear profile are as slick as the side profile, and the platform the car is based on doesn't prove to be a turd, I may just be looking at my next car.

tryan says:

Speaking of Toyota, doesn't anyone else see the Celica design cues in that rising beltline crease from the front fender flares to the rear of the doors?
From this angle, it looks like a Mercedes SLR front end with a Lexus IS rear end, and unfortunately, this is how Hyundai designs are usually commented on - sampling from other manufacturers and not getting credit for a truly "original" design.
If the V8 from the Genesis is offered in this coupe, then we'll really see a car with no competition here in the states.
