A bit late for GPS owners. I would have liked to have this prior to owning a GPS, though. ;-)

I don't use GPS just because... well, I'm a pretty good navigator... but do modern GPS units have the capability of telling you scenic areas, good rest stops, restaurants, etc.?
Upon further investigation of the site, I find it a little lacking. I initially thought it was more complete, but that's not the case. Still... they have a decent list of routes and such.
This got me thinking though: a site that is updated by users (similar to wikipedia) that would feature interesting/cheap/awesome/good sights, restaurants, hotels, rest areas, scenery, etc. All on a map similar to Google Earth that can be zoomed in and out. Clicking on user generated content on the map or by doing a search on the site would reveal loads of information about places that most people probably wouldnt know. Anything like this already exist to this extent?

Well, I'm, uh, off to the bank. *writes down Flic's idea and rushes off to the patent office along with OpFreak's roadnoise-crosswalk idea*

Alaskans (and tourists) have long used the Milepost (milepost.com) in print. I have an old one dating back to 1973 that's fun to look through. Bellsalaska.com has a similar one online. The Milepost always came in handy driving through the boonies when your gas gauge started getting low - you could look up how far it was to the next fuel stop.

Great site, but I only wish when you click on the pictures they would appear larger.
