"Hatchbacks" once again cool

'Bout time I say... Yep, hatchbacks, liftbacks, wagonettes, 3-doors/5-doors—whatever you want to call them, are making their way back on the must-have lists of many new car buyers.

I've always loved the hatchback configuration, and as many of you know my daily driver is a '06 WRX Limited wagon. Well, the word "wagon" in this case is pretty much of a stretch...
In fact Subaru in many markets used to call it a 5-door; and this year, here in the USA, it is now also officially a "5-door" according to SOA.

I'm especially happy to see this body style appearing (in the USA) as somewhat premium models. To me, the new—and more upscale STI is almost perfect. I suspect in a few years, as SOA massages the vehicle content a bit, it will be perfect.

Here's what ModBob had to say over on Alternate Route: Nov 25, 2007 - Hatchback Comeback, and here's the MSNBC story that inspired his posting.

Well, you come out of an SUV, want something fuel-efficient, but you were spoiled by all that cargo space.

Voila. Carries more than full-size sedans, sips gas like a sub-compact.

I've always liked hatchbacks. One of my favorites was my old '84 Civic S, which I bought new. This was the first year of the so-called modern looking Civics. I loved that car, even though it rode like a truck.

Count me in on the hatchbacks (and sportwagons) - especially 5 doors, I like the current GTI 5dr and the Mazda 3 and the upcoming Subie too. Two larger ones that I liked years ago were the Mazda 626 5dr and the Merkur Scorpio 5dr - both were good looking and practical. One really weird looking one from around that time was from GM, I think it was an Olds Omega (and its siblings) - bizarre.

I'm still upset we aren't getting the 3 and 5 door BMW 1 Series in the U.S. The Coupe is just pointless. Less room than the hatchback, and it makes the design goofy too. The 3 door 1 Series is rolling sculpture, imho.

Great news. My wife had a C230 hatch which saw a ton of use moving everything from business supplies to furniture, there was a ton of space in that thing. Glad to see the trend coming back.

I'll take a C30 2.0 please :)
