GPS tracking devices put to use catching goof-offs

If you're a corporate slacker, better watch out, as a GPS tracking device may be tracking your moves...

It turns out that GPS tracking devices are being installed on government-issue vehicles. They are being used to help communities around the country reduce waste and abuse. Part of that involves catching employees shopping, working out at the gym or just loafing while on the clock...
This use of GPS has led to people being fired, thus stoking complaints from employees and unions. City officials say, however, that monitoring employees' movements has cut down abuses, thereby saving the taxpayers money in gasoline and lost productivity.

"We can't have public resources being used on private activities. That's Management 101," Phil Nolan, supervisor of the Long Island town of Islip. Full story here.

We used to use GPS on our vehicles, but the cost of the system was just too high. Now we drive our 200+ mile routes without them. We're SoL if we hit black ice now because nobody will know where we are.

We use "black boxes" now, just like on airplanes. So while they can't track us, afterward they can determine if we were speeding or not wearing our seatbelts.
