I hate this kind of stuff. Maybe because I'm a graphic designer it hits just too close to my heart.
Geely has just introduced a new logo that's supposed to reflect the heart and soul of the company. This is what logos do, or at least that's what they're supposed to do...
And so we have Geely having a "design contest" here, and pictured above is the winnerâand now the designers are open to either widespread praise or widespread scorn. It doesn't take much to figure out which will win out. By the way, their old logo is the small one on the right. Geely Unveils New Logo and Critics Pounce
So what do I think of it?
I'm not sure, as I don't know that much about Geely; their heritage, the symbolism involved here, their mission and vision for the future, and so on and so forth. Being a Chinese automaker adds even more mystery as to the thinking going on here. Off hand I'd say it's interesting. I like the center design element. I'm not wild about the "ovalness" of the overall shape, as that's been beaten to death by countless other car companies. But I'm just really commenting on the "eye candy" aspect here, which is just a knee-jerk reaction like that of most people.

Looks like an alien logo from Star Trek.

Weird; they should have kept the old one.

I'm sure (well, maybe I'm not...) that the center item in the logo is a Chinese letter or symbol, of which we don't know or understand.

I don't think so. I'm not intensively familiar with eastern writing, but that's no character in simple or traditional chinese.

I think it's supposed to be a "g" for Geely.

It "suggests" or "hints" at being a "G" but with clearly a Chinese-like twist to it.
Keep in mind, Geely is now going international, so their new logo—while it still must appeal to their traditional home market audience—must also resonate with the new world audience.

"Who cares, their cars suck anyway!"
Pretty damming review. Which models have you driven? How bad were they? Where they poorly built or just dated designs?
I've never even seen one so I would like to know where these opinions come from.

I dont need to drive a Geely to know they suck. I went to an auto show overseas two years ago and sat in some of their cars. Everything felt flimsy and cheap which just makes me wonder who in their right mind would buy one when they good a quality used car for the same price.
In any case, I refuse to respect any Chinese automake until they get their act together, meaning stopping all their vehicular plagarism and actually putting some effort into the car's quality and safety. I dont know which model I sat in, but the entire car shuddered when I closed the doors.
If you want to actually drive one to find out it sucks, fine. As for me, I'll just laugh at whoever buys one.

Fair enough.
I feel the same way about Korean cars after 20 years of watching them fall apart by the time they are 5 to 7 years old.
I'm looking forward to China joining the market but I'll admit I won't be one of the early buyers.
