2007 LA Auto Show: Alan Mulally—Enabling Technology Guy

As the keynote speaker kicking off LA show press days, Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally circled back to the phrase "enabling technology" time and again. Energy efficiency and sustainability needs lots of new and improved technologies, which in turn enable progress on all fronts.

Alan's best laugh came from an anecdote about the importance of fuel efficiency in aviation, the industry he came from. "When you're taking 300 people to 40,000 feet and flying them to Honolulu, baggage claim is messy if you land short."

The last time I checked, most commercial airliners don't fly at 40,000 feet. I think most cruise at 30,000 to 36,000 feet.

I dunno, looks like he's talking about SYNC and not the cars. He's distracted from the primary business he's in.

Military Airspace is usually reserved for 40+ thousand feet so planes can fly supersonic and not affect the noise ordinaces. (sonic booms scare the heck out of people I'm told) So maybe he was thinking about his troop transports instead of his commercial airliners. Just a guess.

Military aircraft are not allowed to go supersonic except over bodies of water and designated fly zones. Even at 40K+ ft, the general public would hear a jet going supersonic.
