New Impreza, a hit or miss?

The all-new new Subaru Impreza was/is perhaps one of the most hotly debated 2008 models out there. People on car sites like Edmunds either hate it or love it. Those who love it say it is just what Subaru needed in this market segment. Those who hate predict utter failure for this new model, and for Subaru...
Well, if early results are any indicter, it appears that the "love" folks may have called it. September sales are in, and the Impreza has set new sales records in both the USA (up 11%) and Canada (up 94.9%). Granted, it's only one month, but regardless however you slice it, it's good news for Subaru.

Also good news is that the facelifted Tribeca is also seeing sales increases. Both the new Impreza and Tribeca helped Subaru set September sales records.

SOA September sales results can be found here, and SOC sales results here.

I'm of the "hate it" crowd and I had no doubt that sales would increase. It's a mainstream model, now. It's not the niche product it once was.

This news may ended Subaru's WRC era, just like hot selling fatten Civic and Accord ended Honda's Type-R.

It is a miss. I'm a longtime fan of Subaru and I'm no fan of the 2008.
Mechanicals need to be upgraded before I'll sign on.
At this point I consider the new design to be sheeps clothing on a wolf and I want the wolf back.
I smell Corolla in the Impreza....it's making me ill.
At least it is lighter than the previous model.

How was the earlier car a wolf? It was an econobox with a bunch of tacky boy racer add on's and a killer drivetrain.

The new look is no better or worse then the old one. I was hoping for something cooler but Subaru has never been about cool styling, it's about cool driving.

And this car isn't a cool driver.

The "record sales" is misleading. That is record sales for the month of September. This includes new models as well as old ones. Considering that this is a new generation, I'm not surprised Subaru sold more Imprezas this September than any previous. New Imprezas don't always come out in September. Also, I'm sure when the new Civic came out, sales jumped 11% or more for the first month, too. That's typical for a refreshed model.

WRX TR - No tacky boy racer add on's here!

How was the previous gen WRX a wolf? Well, if you don't understand then I'd be wasting my time explaining it to you, like discussing sex with a virgin.

IMO the WRX and Impreza have always placed substance over style, the looks of the 08 are love or hate and that's not a problem, it's always been that way with Subaru.

Seems like Subaru made the right decision to upgrade and expand the Impreza's market. The interior's definitely a huge improvement!

But I suspect it will take the STI version to win back any major enthusiast or "racer" appeal.
Or perhaps a stripped, "Tuner Ready" STI version (no frills, no sound proofing, etc.) is the answer for that segment?

i dont now, probably would sell better, its a generic design whith the good subaru mechanics on it!
turns out on a corolla safer for the mothers and wifes who could drive the damn thing whitout felling shame about her selfs.
for me the car lost his caracther its a bland design and for the subifans its a downgrade since the mechanic parts on the wrx haddent taken any big changes.
maybe subaru wants to put the core subifans on buying only the sti version!since that one are the one whith some better looks and the mech upgrades!!

Touchdown!

Don't worry, friends. The new Impreza WRX STI that will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Show on October 24, 2007, will quell all your fears and concerns. :o)

I was in the love it crowd, so I have to say it, "I told you so!". :P

Enthusiasts love a raw, unrefined car, but the fact is a refined one will sell better, and is.

In response to the crowd that says a freshened model sells better, note that MY2007 was the best year for the 2002-2007 models, so sales for the new model have already exceeded the best September for the previous generation.

Plus, you're all overlooking the rear suspension - they went from cheap struts to a much more sophisticated setup. Sure it allows body roll, but the actual grip numbers have improved.

Better performance, more refinement, more sales. Success!

What are the numbers for sales of the new model Impreza in Sept. 07 compared to sales of the old model in Sept. 07 and Sept. 06?

Please post them ateixeira.

puristsoul says:

Simply put: Miss. But, then again the last version was kinda silly looking. As long as the mechanicals are improved it's still a winner in my book. I'd rather have a bland looking car that can out perform a poser, than the contrary.

r33 says:

i concord whith purist soul ,but why not have the full package?
REFINED AND EXCITING DRIVE EXPERIENCE AND A FIERCE LOOK!
WHY HAS TO LOOK SO ...I DONT NOW COMMON!!!

hondacura4 says:

Ateixeira, I'm an enthusiast and I actually like refinement (its required for me) and that rawness. You can have both as there are examples on the market, S2000, F430 Scuderia, GT3, M3, JDM Civic Type R....they all exude the same refined rawness as I call it.

moparbad says:

12:23 PM, 10/ 5/07

You can call it refined, I call it boring, mundane, Toyotaness.

It is possilbe to improve without losing identity. Impreza redesign filtered out part of the core Subaru character. Either that, or they diluted it.
