Honda announced at the Tokyo auto show that there will be a US-spec Accord diesel for 2009. The engine displaces 2.2L, and is expected to produce 150 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Unique to the Honda diesel is the fact that is will not need a urea injection system like Mercedes and VW, but rather will have a NOx converter that produces its own ammonia through a chemical reaction that reacts with the NOx to produce harmless nitrogen and water. The advantage this has over the Mercedes/VW urea unit is that it will not need to be replenished with AdBlue liquid, which is needed for the urea system to work...

About time. They should really consider putting this engine in the Element, as well.

I think the urea injection system needs to be renamed...

Urea is also known as carbamide. How does carbamide injection sound?
I expect that systems such as the Honda use of catalyst instead of urea will prevail in the longer term.

Sounds too much like carb for carburetor. But I agree, urea is an awful name.
Just come up with a trade mark name like CleanTech or GreenTech and don't mention urea or carbamide in the press releases.
Accord and CR-V should get it first. CR-V does a lot more volume than Element.

This article is wrong. The new clean diesel Jetta coming in 2008 will NOT use urea injection, at least not initially.

Just another example of the media and their favoritism for Honda and Toyota.

Anyone know if the Accord for '09 will have a DIESEL in the Sedan or Coupe? Pls email: kmil123@msn.com
Thanks

classicjetta, the article never stated that new VW Jetta uses Adblue, it stated that "Mercedes and larger VW diesels" use urea/adblue. VW does utilize urea in some of it's larger diesels that are sold outside of the US and has plans to use urea/adblue in Passat and larger diesel vehicles.
Honda 2.2L, Jetta diesel, and Lancer diesel are all planned to meet emissions without urea addition.

Kmil, from what I gather the 2.2 i-DTEC will be offered in the Accord sedan and the CRV. The 3.0L i-DTEC V6 diesel should show up as an option on the Odyssey, Ridgeline, and the next gen Pilot.

I was planning on purchasing an 08 Accord sedan to replace my 98 Accord until hearing about this. I will wait another 10-12 months now. Another website said 52 mpg hwy. That is worth waiting for even if it is a little sluggish.
VW is suppose to release a Jetta TDI in Jan of 09 that gets 60 mpg/hwy. But its a VW. They are always trashed in consumer reports annual car edition for reliability.

Just in case my blog entry on Nov. 3, 2007, at 3:05 pm, was accidentally removed, here it is again in double quotes, from my hard copy printout of its (short-lived) appearance:
"Whoa! How do we know this story about availability of the 50-state Honda diesel being moved up to MY'09 is even true? What's missing is 1) the name(s) of the Honda exec(s) who said this (or at least the customary 'on condition of anonymity,' etc.), 2) confirmation from the business world, 3) confirmation from American Honda, or 4) confirmation on any Honda Web site."
If this re-posting of a legitimate question properly expressed gets lost again in any way, I'll have to assume the MY'09 aspect of the Honda diesel story remains unsubstantiated -- and consider STRAIGHTLINE not straight.

The new VW TDI's will be '09 models available in September 08. I own a '99 Beetle TDI and have found it to be remarkably reliable. The diesel is rock-solid and still returns 47MPG whilst driven hard.
That being said, I am intrigued with the Honda Accord diesel as it has been a hassle having the VW serviced - the nearest VeeDub dealer is 1.5 hours away and the local mechanics in my rural town don't want to deal with the TDI engine. A Honda dealership is just a mile down the road, however.

I've owned a '99 Golf TDI since new. It's got 306,000 miles on the thing and it uses very little oil. Having said that I now must tell you that it has been in and out of the shop (electric's and vacum prob's) the whole time. Repair costs ,expensive scheduled maint. and the high cost of diesel make it alot more expensive to operate than a 4cyl Accord which I have also owned. My experience with VW service deptments is that they simply replace parts until something works right.
Still, if Honda can bring their characteristic reliability, economy and servicability in a Diesel Accord Wagon then I'll get my calculator back out and see if it will stack up.

Sadly, a Honda sales rep informed me that the only diesel he's be advised to expect is in the Odyssey.
