Full Test: 2008 Dodge Caliber SRT-4

2008 Dodge Caliber SRT-4

Dodge beefs up the Caliber with the SRT-4. It has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that can produce 285 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission.

But is it enough to compete in the tough sport compact crowd?

This was a feel good article about hanging onto my Neon SRT-4.

I can't believe the MazdaSpeed3 is cheaper the the SRT4 in the states. Here is Canada the Mazda starts at $31,095 while the Dodge is $24,995. (and the WRX is $33,895).

I like the Mazda better but have trouble doing business with a company that's ripping me off.

Right now I would buy the Dodge of these 3.

Really don't like that interior on the Dodge. I feel like just about every other competitor in this class has a better interior. I guess interior design is as subjective as exterior design so my two cents isn't worth ...well, two cents. But that's how I feel. Don't like that steering wheel, don't like that center stack, don't care for those guages. Seats look ok though. I dunno...still liking the Si in this class. Its cheap and still fun.

I'm really impressed by the output and the 6-speed manual. Dodge should consider an AWD version. Still, I'll be on the lookout for these.

I still dig the looks of this car, very powerful and aggressive. If it were my moneyI'd buy a Mazdaspeed 3, but definitely this over a VW GLI or R32 which seems like a ripoff to me.

Dodge should have price it lower, rather than having to offer incentives (it will happen soon enough, just wait).

For even $2 grand less, you can forgive the cheap interior and general lack of refinement.

The seats look great. That and the engine alone just aren't enough, though.

It just goes to show that a boat-load of power doesn't solve anything. Even though they have just over two-thirds of the power of this thing, I would much rather spend a similar amount of money on a GTI or Civic Si. Each have enough power to do the job (just slightly slower to 60), MUCH better handling, and MUCH better interiors.

Is it just me or does this car look like a Transformer? It's a killer robot right?

Well, that's what you get when you take a small truck and try to make it perform like a sporty car. Too much weight, too much height. Top it off with crappy build and cheap materials, and voila!!! Dodge Caliber!!

Dodge had a good thing going with the SRT Neon. All they needed to do was develop an even better small car to put this powerplant and driveline into. But no. Dodge wants to build pretty much nothing but trucks and ugly hatchbacks. Well, they got one........and lost whatever momentum they had going with the Neon SRT.
