Andre Idzikowski and Bud Ekins

The motoring world lost two remarkable people: Andre Idzikowski and Bud Ekins.

Andre Idzikowski started as Car and Driver's gopher back in 1982 when David E. Davis hired him. He remained at C&D throughout his career, and rose to become C&D's "car czar," a.k.a...
road test editor. He was also a good friend of D.E.D, who wrote this appreciation over on Winding Road .

Idzikowski was born and raised in Ann Arbor and received his engineering degree from the University of Michigan. He passed away at 47 from leukemia, which he developed at age 19, and battled throughout his life. You can read what Car & Driver had to say about their editor and friend here .

Bud Ekins was a famous motorcycle off-roader, a founder of the Baja 1000, film stuntman and a good friend of actor Steve McQueen.

Ekins most famous stunt was the then incredible jump in the 1963 movie The Great Escape , in which he jumped that barbed wire fence. Many, myself included, thought that McQueen did the actual jump, but it was actually Ekins who performed it.

Other stunt credits including the TV series "ChiPs" and films such as "Diamonds Are Forever ," "Earthquake ," "The Towering Inferno ," "Animal House " and "The Blues Brothers ."

Ekins passed away at 77 of natural causes. Full story here .
