UAW strikes GM!



What everyone was hoping to avoid has come to pass. The UAW, at 11:00 am this morning, went on strike against GM. While the two parties made great strides in many areas, they failed to come to agreement on key areas such as health care and job security, which have been bugaboos all along. This is the first UAW strike against GM since 1998, and the first national strike since 1970...
"We thought we would be able to accomplish this no later than this weekend, but our efforts have been to no avail," wrote Gettelfinger in an email to union local officials, telling them to prepare to strike. "While we have made progress in many areas, GM has failed to address major concerns."

So as 73,000 or so union workers plan to march at picket lines, talks with UAW and GM leaders continue.
