Nissan began taking orders of GT-R

Ah, but there's one catch... You must be in Japan, and ordering a Japanese-spec model.

Hey, but so what. The good news is that the car is getting ever closer to being a reality, and before you know it, we'll see it here Stateside too...
In Japan the car can be had in three trim levels: The standard model has 480 HP and a $57,000 MSRP. There's a V-Spec for $67,000, and an EVO-spec monster with 530 HP, which weighs 200 pounds less and has a hefty a $94,000 sticker. JDM models are expected to hit showrooms in December.

With 530hp for $94K for the Nissan, it seems that the real competition in price, size and format would be the upcoming 2009 Vette. That baby is gonna put on the smack down with 620hp!
IMO that would be an interesting match up.

I find this very exciting. Please please please Toyota come up with something to put on the market. After the 350z and now this it's making me sad. Regardless the Skyline sounds funtastic.

I bet Toyota execs are having a brain jam trying to find some compatibility between the thought of an electronics crunching, stiffly tuned sports suspension; transmission shredding 500+ horsepower, and a highly reliable car.
That's why the LF-A and the Supra are stuck in the pipe.

"But you must make it reliable!" The Toyota exec screams at the engineer, who desperately tries to put some sense into his book headed boss.

Keep in mind those are Japanese prices, which are likely going to be different when it comes over here.

It happened before, the MKIV Supra was well engineered, safe, and inspired feelings hereto unknown for Japanese autos (in me at least!). Someday they'll get it right again. Hell, I'd even take another AE86. Just give me decent power, good balance/handling, feedback, and rear wheel drive. There need to be more cars like that on the market right now.

I'm just waiting for a Japanese sports car rennaisance.

The '90s was the golden age of Japanese muscle cars. The equivalents that exist today, while nice, don't have the impact their predecessors had. An RX-8 is a joke compared to the exhaulted RX-7. The Supra was far beyond any "sport coupe" Lexus made since. The 350Z is a lot prettier than the 300ZX, but performance isn't much different. The NSX is just gone. The Civic lost it's edge (though the current gen is definately bringing it back). The SE-R has aged decently (some would argue).
The only two cars that carry the banner anymore are the Evo and STI, both of which were in their prime in the '90s.

this is inaccurate.
the evo spec and all that talk came from best motoring or something such. i dont know why people believe it and quote it as fact when, like most journalism regarding the car, its pure speculation being passed off as fact.

so far, the truth 'appears' to be the following:
nissan dealers in japan are taking preorders on the gt-r.
there are three versions:
base @ JPY7.7mln.
black @ JPY7.93 mln.
premium @ JPY8.3mln.

the black version is stated as adding volk or forged wheels + re070s
the premium version adds bose and an alarm system to the black version. there's conflicting information but side airbags seem to be optional on all models.

colors are black, red, titanium gray, dark metal gray, pearl white (extra JPY30k) and ultimate metal silver (JPY315.5k)

engine output across the board identical.
no 6mt offered.

thats from nagtroc and gtroc

57k is pretty cheap for that kind of power. If anything, assuming Japanese prices, the car will be cheaper here.

Desmo, even though the Vette is in the same segement as the GTR I wouldnt consider them direct competitors. Nissan clearly went after the 911 Turbo/GT2 with the GTR.

How so? Both a large front engine rear drive cars. Sure Nissan is going after Porsche, cuz that sounds more impressive, but it seems that they have forgotten who else plays in their league. Or maybe they quite conveniently don't consider a 630hp Vette for the same money as a Nissan in their league? (Edmunds states the top spec Nissan will be $94K).

By "direct competitors" I mean that the average buyer probably wouldnt have the Vette and the GTR on the same list if he/she were buying a supercar. The Vettes natural direct competitor would be the Viper SRT-10.

The 911 Turbo and the GTR would be a more direct comparison because of the obvious simularites; turbo 6's, high tech AWD systems ETC ETC.
