NHTSA and China sign agreement on auto safety



Boy this sure slipped under the radar: An agreement between NHTSA and China to improve the safety of Chinese vehicles was signed last week—and this very important (and timely!) news is just starting to filter out.

In any event a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) that formalizes a relationship was signed last Wednesday. The MOC puts forth goals for creating safety standards and enforcing them, informing consumers, sharing research, improving fuel economy, and handling safety investigations and recalls.

This news couldn't have arrived fast enough, as the Chinese are—and deservedly so—are being battered the world over on this and other auto- and non-auto-related issues...

I wonder if this means NHTSA is going to help them pre-test their cars before they make final production? I've never heard of this sort of agreement.

I wonder if this is a response to all the backlash China has received for the horrendous safety testing. Remember, most people only started to see the crash testing about a month ago. That would put this resolution right on target for just that kind of political maneuvering.
