Go to the Race and Watch It on TV

Nextel FanView If you're a racing newbie or a casual fan, you might actually prefer to watch the race on television rather than shelling out the dough to be, you know, at the track .

Let's face it, only the most dedicated and diligent fans can keep up with exactly where their favorite car is at any one time, and being at a race in person can be a tedious experience for the novice or the young, easily bored fan.

Being at the track can actually cause you to miss out on a lot of the little nuances of positioning and timing that make the race so interesting to watch on television, and no one can track position changes and pit stops when they get up to use the restroom or buy some of that oh-so-reasonably-priced merchandise from a trackside vendor.

Fortunately for TV-dependent race fans with middle-to-deep pockets, Nextel comes to the rescue with FanView...

This handheld device lets you view the race's broadcast television feed as well as several predetermined in-car cameras, and includes headphones so you won't miss out on any of your favorite commentary.

Users can even listen in on the drivers' and race officials' radio chat, eavesdropping on strategy and the handing out of penalties. The device even displays real-time points and standings changes.

At a rental price of $50 a day or $85 for a race weekend, it's not cheap, but it will enhance the experience greatly for the first timer or non-rabid enthusiast. The units can also be purchased online for about $370 or at the track for about $415. -- Fran Irwin, Tech Contributor

You know what else I hate about live races? No instant replay. It's so rare to catch an accident as it happens. NASCAR should invest in jumbotrons.

Ya that kinda sucks, I guess that's why you should watch races at Bristol where its small and plenty of bumping happens (although not with the new surface, sadly).

Why not just stay home and watch the race for free, if that's the case?
