Full Test: 2008 Cadillac CTS V6 DI

2008 Cadillac CTS

Cadillac produced a uniquely American sport sedan with a 304-horsepower, direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 with a zero to 60 time of 6.5 seconds.

Is it enough to take on the heavy hitters like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Infiniti G35 and Acura TL?

What do you think of the new 2008 Cadillac CTS?

I can't begin to express how awesome it is to see a 300+hp V6 coming out of Detroit.

Love that interior, that's what impressed me most.

I gotta say, though, I'm a bit concerned that the focus is on the interior and infotainment. The Acura RL has the GPS with the XM Traffic input, but that didn't help that car.

The price is eye-opening, but I'm sure you can skip all the gadgets and get a great value. 5 series size for a 3 series price.

What this car needs is a set of lightweight 16" wheels/tires.

this car needs to be a bit lighter
but the interior looks great
best interior to come outta detroit in a very long time

Ive actually been to my local Caddy dealer twice to look at the CTS as I find it interesting. The proportions and stance are very nice as well as the aggressive low front end. Great car but most on the dealer lot were stickering in the $42-$46K range which is a bit pricey but the did come with plenty of gadgets.

The only things I dont like about the car is the rear end as it looks a bit tall and narrow whic is the exact opposite of the rest of the car. The other thing is vehicle weight. This will seriously hurt its straight line performance as most non luxury sedans (Accord V6, Camry V6, Aura V6) offer much better acceleration. For its class is way behind in terms of straightline performance.

As was mentioned in the 2nd Opinions section, it seems that all its handling performance comes from crazy sticky tyres. How long do Michelin PS2s last anyway? 10K miles? Put 'normal' tyres on it and see how it does.
Interesting to note that the BMW 330/335 still out handles/grips it with crappy run flats.
On a different topic, can that excellent nav system be used on the go, or does the car have to be parked?

I think it's looks great but then I've been a fan of the CTS since it first arrived. ( I like American attitude over European aloofness... and I'm not even American).

The only thing I don't like is all that plastic crap under the hood.

There's nothing more pleasing to the eye to a car guy then lifting the hood and seeing a beautiful engine. Lift this hood and it looks like it's still in the box it came in.

It's almost like they are caving in to the simple minded people of the world who are easily confused by anything mechanical. Cover up everything you don't need to see and people will be happy. Sad.

Very impressive ca, but it makes me sad, sad that Lincoln sucks so much and has no answer to this car. I dont think the MKS will cut it.

Hey that looks like a nice car. Maybe GM is starting to get it: It's about good product, not marketing garbage.

maybe if edmunds took this into their longterm flleet, and give the engine time to break in.

Nice car still. My only issue with the car is that I hate the it sits between 2 well established groups. The 3series, adn 5series. it is right in the middle

304hp and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds?? Come on. Yes, it's a vast improvement over the original CTS, but you could be out-dragged (or at least given a good fight) by a GTI or Civic Si (which each cost about half as much). The 335i has less power and gets to 60 over a second and a half quicker! Having said that, I would take it over the new C, but sadly it still can't crack the 3-series nut.

desmo: not fair, I bet those PS2s cost less than the run-flats and last about as long.

SubyTrojan says:

The 335i's advertised power is underrated. At the crank, it is easily making more than 300 hp (closer to the E46 M3's 333 hp).

The mediocre 0-60 time could be attributed to the sticky tires. So they help you stop, but retard your go.

desmolicious says:

ateixera - maybe. Does anyone have any experience with PS2s in a car that weighs nearly 4000lbs?....

I'm very impressed. To my eye that interior and front end are incredible, while the sides and rear are passable. From the write-up and video it sounds like the power and handling are also decent. No, it's not 1/4 mile monster but it sounds like it moves well enough.

I'm a 335i owner and would consider the CTS as my next car. The CTS won't ever perform like the 335i, but I wouldn't expect it to. The CTS, being a Cadillac, will always be more luxury than sport, while the 3-series is about that 50/50 split. I love the 335i. It's the best car I've ever driven and the best car I've ever owned, but I'll definitely test drive a CTS if and when I get bored of the 335i.

I thought that my next car would be a 5-series, but the CTS looks like it might be a very nice alternative. As was mentioned, the CTS has a 5-Series size (and feel?) for a 3-series price. I would like to see a comparison of the CTS and 5-Series as well as a long-term test of the CTS.

desmolicious - you seem to suggest that BMW just slapped on some run-flats. They actually put a lot of effort into engineering their suspension to work perfectly with the specific brand of run-flats that 3-series coupes/sedans ship with - so I wouldn't assume that they are a disadvantage. Also - as you should know, tire wear is a direct result of driving style and while it's true Michelin's can run out quick, they still come with 60,000+ warranties.

desmolicious says:

You are telling me that the Michelin PS2, a sports tyre, comes with a 60,000 mile warranty? Tirerack.com shows it has no mileage warranty. Having read reviews of it on their site though, it seems like a spectacular tyre.
