CARNIVAL OF CARS: A Drive Around the Auto Blog Block for Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007

American automakers have cut more than 80,000 jobs and lost at least $15 billion in the past year at least in cumulative part thanks to decade of union excesses, so the UAW threatens to strike GM if the current negotiations fail. That's the ticket, that'll fix the industry and save those remaining jobs.
There's an auto show at Frankfurt this week and news that GMC is adding a V-8 to its Canyon mid-size pickup, so go here on Straightline for the best coverage of the former and here at Autoblog for details on the better-late-than-never move by GM to match the Dakota. If it's also available in the Colorado, I might just trade in my trusty ole 96 Dakota V-6!

Oh yes, don't miss Michelle Krebs and her detailed analysis of who will pay for going green, at The Auto Observer.

Still saving for your Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang? Sorry, they're all sold out, according to 4wheelsblog.com. Also from Frankfurt, Winding Road reports Ford is preparing a new Europe-only Kuga line.

Some things never change: Austin Davis at My Honest Mechanic responds to a reader who says his 88 LeBaron ragtop's headlight doors only operate intermittently.

We should be so lucky as Eric Tingwall. He won the Inside Line contest and writes a solid, detailed review of the new Saturn Astra. Eric is a "citizen journalist" and knows his way around a well-written sentence.

Dorri at If It's Got An Engine wishes he were still invincible. Don't miss the part about the first motorcycle, either.

Over at Jalopnik, the question of the day is What Car Makes You Saddest? For me, the next item would be a solid candidate.

We toldja and toldja, never hide your three Cosworth Vegas out in the barn, but nooooooo, you wouldn't listen. Hemmings Auto News has the sad story.

Left Lane News reports there WILL be a Caddy variant of the upcoming Saab 4-X.

I'm not exactly sure but I think The Truth About Cars' Michael Karesh is less than impressed with the 08 Dodge Grand Caravan.

And finally, Brucie is indeed spinning in his grave, as described by Fast Machines on the unbelievable turn of events in F1. Frankly, this situation could be a threat to much more than simply the future of Ron Dennis and McClaren Racing.

That's all, folks, see ya next week!

I don't understand why diesels would be so much more expensive here in the US. In Europe you may be talking about a $1000 difference. Perhaps it would be far more expensive for GM but that'd only be because GM sold their heavy duty divisions. If GM ever matched up with Catapillar, they'd rule the world.

Btw, the red is far easier to read than the lime green. Thanks!

estreka, allow me to speculate. Stricter U.S. emissions standards for diesels mean manufacturers have to design, manufacture and install components especially for U.S. diesels. Plus, since gasoline is relatively cheap in the U.S., the potential savings on fuel costs for U.S. buyers aren't enough to prompt many to pay more for a diesel, so those added manufacturing costs have to be amortized over relatively few vehicles.

Ah. Good points all around.

The problem with TTAC is that they try so hard to be funny, the reporting is secondary. They say so little about the actual van.

BMW and Subaru still have a ban in effect with them, i.e. they don't get press cars, for tasteless writing.
