BMW has been pretty adamant about not making a Motorsport version of the X5. As far as it's concerned, an SUV is not the proper basis for an "M" vehicle. That hasn't stopped the German company from making hopped up versions of previous models, however, and the next high performance X5 looks as though it could be the fastest one yet.
We've heard rumors of V10 power, and this prototype appears to confirm them...
With most of BMW's attention focused on the launch of the M3 and 1 Series coupes early next year, we donât anticipate U.S. sales of the BMW X5 5.0is to start until late 2008.

Get 'em while they're hot. Once CAFE standards go up, moonlight vehicles like these will probably go away.

Massively heavy sporting SUVs seem so pointless, but I'm sure they'll sell every one they make. Wonder what this thing will weigh?

NOT TRUE.
I know from a reliable BMW soruce that this is only V10 engine testing for the X6. This is not an X5xx.is mule.
