Long-Term Wrap-Up: 2006 Kia Sedona EX

2006 Kia Sedona EX

We bid a fond farewell to our long-term Kia Sedona EX after 25,000 miles and a year of hard labor.

Boy, did we use that car in all of its seating configurations. It helped us move, picked up furniture we were too cheap to have delivered, carted around kids, withstood cookie crumbs and soda spills.

The Sedona was a very practical vehicle and will be missed...

Will its replacement be a new Chrysler minivan?

A little error in your writeup:
You say, "When our EX's tour of duty came to a close we entered its vitals into the Edmunds.com True Market Value® calculator to find it valued at $18,850. By the end of our review the Sedona had depreciated over half of its original price. That is a staggering 59 percent over 12 months.

True Market Value at service end: $18,580
Depreciation: $12,785 or 59.2% of original MSRP"

Actually, the depreciation is 40.8% of the original MSRP - the value is 59.2% of original MSRP.

Given that actual sale prices (Why not use the TMV in the original equation?) were considerably lower than the MSRP, particularly with the $4000 rebate plus around $1750 or so extra cash to dealers, this is not as big a drop as the article suggests. Using approximate invoice of $29000, at its lowest, you could have bought this van for about $24000. Then, you'd have 22.5% depreciation, which really is not out of line for a Kia that once sold as used, loses its touted "10year/100k warranty" [it returns to its B-t-B 5/60 warranty to the second and subsequent owners], plus its 25k miles.

Another thing - the Sienna got a new engine since that comparison test, and an additional 40+ horsepower. The Kia is no longer the quickest van. Not that it's lacking in any way.
