Frankfurt Auto Show: 2009 Audi A4

Audi will debut its all-new 2009 A4 at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show next month.

As with many new cars, this one has grown a bit, as it is 4.6 inches longer and 2.2 inches wider. Here in the USA expect initial models to be powered by a turbo four (FWD) and a 3.2L V6 (AWD).

So they're not doing the 2.0T quattro anymore? I also thought that they would include a power hike with the new generation. I read somewhere that next year's GTI will get a 30hp bump, and I thought maybe the whole 2.0T range would get equal treatment. That would bring it more in line with the BMW 328i.

For the first time, I'm not disappointed by the A4 from any angle. I love its new wider stance and more refined rear end. And nudging the front axle forward did wonders in my mind.

I won't be in the new car market for another couple years, but in terms of soothing my vanity, this redesign pushes Audi ahead of BMW in the running. Vanity aside, I'm anxiously awaiting long-term testing.

Wow, the changes are so subtle that I thought this was just a face-lift.

I hope that doesn't back fire on them. It looks an awful lot like the 2008 A4.

You might even say it looks a lot like the 1997 A4.

Nice. Really if they made the car more responsive and decently sized inside, this could be a 3 series fighter.

I too am worried about the way the article was written - it seems to say no quattro with the 2.0T. That would be my car of choice as the 2.0T is easy to tune and with RWD-biased AWD you wouldn't have to fret over torque steer.

I look forward to seeing it and driving it. Audi makes gorgeous cars, in my eyes, but the driving/reliability/service/space leave something to be desired on most of their cars.

Edit: I re-read the article and I'm convinced the author doesn't know Audis very well. One sentence that worried me I'll now chalk up to ignorance: "As now, a four-cylinder engine will be matched with front-wheel drive, while the V6 will get all-wheel drive." Right now an A4 with AWD and the 2.0T is an option and always has been with the 4 banger.

I'm no longer worried and I look forward to teasing an AWD 2.0T 09 A4 next year.

While it is a very nice looking car, claiming that it is going to be a sportier drive than a 3 series is quite a reach. Until they have the same weight balance as a 3 (50-50 front to rear), they are fighting an uphill battle.

Yawn, yawn, and yawn again.

Why does every manufacturer feel it's necessary to enlarge a given car model each time it's revised? Are the manufacturers mirroring the natural trait the human species has (to get bigger as it grows)? This growth trait forced me to cancel considering several car models because they simply grew too big!

I am glad to see Audi staying ahead of the curve and going for universal styling vs. BMW standard out there ways. I’m looking forward to seeing the new a5's and a4s coming out next year on the road, and possibly owning one.
