Toyota's Tundra slowly but surely grabbing domestic buyers

Little by little the new 2007 Toyota Tundra is making inroads with domestic truck buyers.

For the April-through-June 10 time slot 23% of trade-ins are coming from owners of the old Tundra. The Tundra, 4Runner, Camry and Tacoma combined account for more than 35% of all trade-ins. Ford F-series trucks are the second-most traded-in vehicle for a Tundra at 10.5% of trade-ins, up from 7% for the same period a year ago...
Dodge Rams account for 5.6% of trade-ins, up from 3.9%. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra represent 5.4% and 3.2%, respectively, of Tundra trade-ins, the same for the Silverado and up slightly for the Sierra from last year.

Good to see the Tundra getting the respect it deserves. I had one for a weekend and didn't want to give it back. If I had a serious need for a full size pickup, it would be at the top of my list.

I can only imagine what Ford and Dodge have up their sleeves to remain competitive.

I honestly wish these full size trucks weren't getting so big. I'm not tall by any means and reaching into the bed to grab something keeps on getting harder with each new generation of truck. I blame the F-150 for starting this tall bed trend :P

As for the Tundra's competition, I'm wondering what Dodge is doing about the Ram since I'm sure they're sweating the worst of it compared to GM/Ford.

Those are much higher stats than I thought! Toyota is indeed making headway into the domestic market. I'll add myself to the Chevy tradein stat once Toyota offers an HD model. That is, unless Nissan does it first.

As my grandfather always said " you have to crawl before you can walk" and this is also true with this truck. Even though the new Tundra has had more than enough obstacles in its path (cam issue, odd pricing, late launch of CrewMax, and a recall of the previous Tundra right before the launch) Toyota still managed to keep sales rolling.

You also have to keep in mind that a lot of buyers who own(ed) domestic trucks also have a Camry or a different Toyota product as well. This is simply due to Toyota (at the time) didnt offer a true full size pickem' up to go head to head with the domestics so they opted for a domestic truck. Now that Toyota does offer something a lot more competitive its time to trade the domestic truck in.

Im starting to see more and more Tundras on the road and even more suprising, more than a few contractors and the like with new Tundras.

I dont think GM and Ford should dust their shoulders off just yet as Toyota still has something up its sleeve...cough.. cough.. HD.. cough.. cough. Hope that helps Estreka! Oh, a lil birdy told me.

Hondacura - Any perceived stats one might be able to speculate on?

I suppose that's all I need to hear. Man, I need to get into the birdy business.

GM holding it's own in trade-ins seems right in line with Edmunds reviews. I'd happily take either truck! Thought if I were getting a truck, I'd like to go in with both feet and get a Dmax/Alison!

The "bird" is actually my father who's a product planner for a large Japanese based car manufacturer! =)

You guys wont believe this. A co-worker of mine and myself were talking about trucks. He has a newer (05 -06?) Silverado 4x4 4 door, not sure what trim level. Anyway I was telling him about the big 5.7 V8 the Tundra offers and how it hauls ass. He inturn tells me that " theToyota V8 uses a GM LS series block" and he swears by it.

I then told him that there is no way that could work because #1) GMs large V8's are pushrod equipped (cam in block) and #2) the Toyota has a DOHC setup. #3 I dont think GM even offers a 5.7 V8 anymore. He still insists Toyota uses GM blocks. Where he recieved this information is beyond me but I find it amusing.

Faith and perception is a tricky business. When someone wants to believe something, it's hard to convince them otherwise.
