Spy photos: 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X on the track

You may have seen the carefully orchestrated press photos of the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X , but these are the first spy photos of the same car on the street sans camouflage. Taken as the car was making some hot laps on the Nurburgring test track, this prototype doesn’t reveal anything new. It still has the nicely chiseled features that give it a more aggressive look than its main rival -- the 2009 Subaru WRX STI . Look for the debut of both vehicles at the Tokyo auto show in Oct...
with sales of the Evo beginning in early 2008.

Such a nice looking car. I wonder what times it would have on the Nurburgring.

The front looks godawful with the license plate off to the side.

Looks like they finally decided to walk two separate path: Lightweight and everyday usibility vs power and technology.

The photos do reveal that the EVO X looks great in black like that.

The front plate will sort of spoil that front end. Here in MD they're required, too. :-(

The front plate is off to the side to let the intercooler get air. You would be suprised how much airflow is blocked by a license plate.

bob: i don't know if there's anywhere else to put the plate! lol! like hondacura said... it'd end up hampering the car if it was dead in the center...

all that said, egads this thing looks good. AGGRESSIVE good. it's not really "elegant" or anything but it just looks good. however, the taillights on this thing look a little too high... i'd love to get this in a charcoal gray or black. :) darn you subaru!!! get some better designers! although i must say, the STI isn't bad at all. just too... vanilla... if you know what i mean. it does look better with the muscular fenders, etc. than the regular impreza...

That's why I think it's a poor design. This is just one more example of carmakers ignoring the reality that front license plates are here and won't go away.

The result is a car will look great in states that don't require front tags, but will look ugly in states that do.

If the intercooler is the issue, follow Subaru's example and put he intercooler up top with a hood scoop.
