Recycling hybrid batteries

While the image here may not be great, the story is...

Ever wonder what might happen to all those hybrid batteries once the vehicles have passed on to that great junkyard in the sky? Well, so has California utility PG&E, and they are going to do something about it.

Down the road PG&E is going to buy thousands of plug-in hybrid and electric car batteries once they've outlived their usefulness for transportation and install them in the basements of office towers and at electrical substations...
The batteries will store green energy and be used to cut peak demand for expensive—and greenhouse gas-emitting—electricity. Sounds like a plan to me!

This is another boost for hybrids, which are already doing well. Having a buyer for those batteries should reduce overall costs significantly.

I'm glad to hear this. I wouldn't call myself an environmentalist, but I would've hated to see all those batteries get tossed.

But...won't the batteries be useless anyway at that age? Or are they planning on them being weak and just using more?
