Honda claims new diesel Accord will get over 60 mpg

I suspect this new Honda Accord diesel (Honda Accord diesel on the way ) will be everything the current Accord hybrid isn't: It will get great fuel mileageĀ—and it will sell like hotcakes, that is of course, they price it right.

The engine is believed to be a 2.2L i-CTDi. At a recent California diesel technology convention Honda stated the car was capable of 62.8 mpg. The Honda diesel will use a catalytic converter that reduces nitrogen oxide output by converting it to ammonia, and then use the ammonia to further neutralize the remaining NOx...

That's incredible gas mileage. Just imagine if it gets hooked up to a hybrid system.

Is that for real? In Europe the only diesels getting that kind of mileage are microcars with engines half that size.

Bravisimo!!

I think this should've already been developed and on the road by now. I believe these types of high tech diesels are a big opportunity and they may have limited all the hype surrounding the current hybrids. To date, an opportunity missed in my eyes.

To Carlisimo- 60 mpg is not exactly new for diesels. The 1996-1997 VW Passat TDI that was sold in the US and Canada achieved 60 mpg real world (it was rated 47 mpg highway EPA) on the highway if kept between 55 and 65 mph and the Passat is a mid to full size car.
With a Jetta Wagon TDI 2003 I can occasionally obtain 60 mpg highway, though 48 to 55 mpg was typical.
The honda ratings are believable.

There have been several reports of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe getting around 50mpg under certain circumstances, although most people say they get 31mpg in mixed driving. That's still fantastic for a nearly 2 ton SUV.

Oh, glad to be corrected. One more question, are those US gallons or UK gallons?

Good question. I don't know. If they're UK gallons, then the mileage will be a bit less, but still very good.

It is in UK gallons. That works out to about 52.3 gallons US. It's still pretty darn good.

Santa Fe getting 50mpg? Maybe being delivered to the dealer on the back of a flat bed...

Translation: oops, we messed up by putting a V6 in our hybrid instead of the more efficient 2.4l, so we're going to go to plan B and try diesels instead. ;-)

Not that I'd mind trying one.

desmolicious.... you stand corrected ;)

Santa Fe 50mpg

Please put that engine in an Odyssey (and every other Honda for that matter...).

Leave it to Honda to impress yet again with their engine prowess. This could be huge for them.

I simply don't believe a car the size of the new Accord can get 60 mpg. I also don't believe it's the 2.2. I think the engine will be 2.4 or 2.5 liters.
