CARNIVAL OF CARS: A Drive Around The Auto Blog Block for Saturday, June 16, 2007

They dug up a brand new 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in a time capsule in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this week and Dale Jr. signed with The New York Yankees, I mean, Hendrick Motorsports, so it's probably not possible to have any more excitement. But let's try anyway, ok?
So yesterday they dug up that gold and white 57 Plymouth Belvedere buried in the Tulsa time capsule and found it covered in mud and  corrosion, thanks to a leaky vault. Boyd Coddington was on hand to get the thing cleaned up and running but he pronounced the engine hopeless. I grew up in Okie City and all I can say is waddja expect from a bunch of wine-sippin' T-towners?

Leave it to Jalopnik to ask the obvious question - What would you bury if you had a big hole in the ground, a lot spare bubble wrap and 50 years to wait around to dig it up?

Now to the really VIP news of the week - Dale Jr. joins Jeff and Jimmie to create the Hendrick Dream Team. Shawn Courschne reports Jeff is "expecting big things" out of Dale. Clearly, the mind games among "teammates" has already started. Brian at Racedriven.com reports the campaign to keep #8 with Dale Jr is well underway.

Porsche announced that it's pulling out of the Detroit Auto Show. Why? Peter DeLorenzo at Auto Extremist explains that it's a religion thing. You know, something about being holier ...

Even if you don't care that Audi has apparently dropped its RS4 V-8 sedan, you gotta click on over to Winding Road to see the photo. It's like a cartoon on wheels.

If you're thinking about buying the next generation Prius, 4Wheelsblog says a Japanese daily reports Toyota has decided to delay it a year due to the changeover to a lithium ion battery. Sort of a delayed charge approach to marketing ...Speaking of sparky sports, Dorrington Williams at If It's Got An Engine is waxing enthusiastic about Tesla.

Want to see a Mazda3 do the ring in under nine minutes? DrivingEnthusiast has the YouTube. Carpundit was at the Canadian Grand Prix and was VERY impressed with Lewis Hamilton. The next Jimmy Clark?

Quick, somebody check the water at Cerebrus cauz Leftlane News says the suits there are actually thinking about bidding for Jaguar and Land Rover during Ford's fire sale of the No-Longer-So-Premium Auto Group. Maybe my glasses are fogged up but all I see written all over this one is "Bad Plan."

If you read nothing else today, go to AskPatty.com and watch "For Pity Sake, Don't Drive."

Kay Bell at Don't Mess With Taxes was rather impressed with something she heard this week on NPR about why SUV sales are up even as gas prices reach record levels. That's not supposed to happen, but there it is, bigger than Texas.

The Auto Prophet suggests this video proves we need an Automotive Darwin Award. I suggest it be called  the Please Take Yourself Out of the Gene Pool Award.

Toyota is smart to get the Li-ion batteries right. Look at all the laptop battery recalls.

In fact they should stick with NiMH if they can't sort them out soon.
