People don't want to buy fuel efficient cars, they want others to buy fuel efficient cars. It's not about how fast you are, it's about much faster you are compared to other drivers. Still 25 mpg on the highway is not bad for a 340 HP vehicle.

Haha! Wrench in the gears.

Oops. LOL
At least is has cylinder deactivation.
Car & Driver makes a good point in an editorial this month - Al Gore's house uses 10 times more kilowatts than the average american household.
Why are cars taking all the blame for global warming? You spend more heating and cooling a large house, by far.

The argument that clueless politicians like Obama will give is "well, then make the 300C (or whatever) get 35 MPG". To do that, you need to make it a hybrid, which adds $3-5K to the cost. Of course, only the domestic automakers would have to do this - Toyota and Honda sell more cars than trucks so don't have to worry about CAFE. So the consumer skips over the domestic because Toyota/Honda can offer the same type of car/engine without the hybrid tech for thousands less. Net result: no change in gas consumption, but the domestics get screwed.
The only thing that drives people to more fuel efficient cars are higher gas prices, period. There's no magic technology that's going to give a big boost to fuel economy for only $100 (or $1000) more per car.

Al Gore just received permission (after a long battle) from the Tennessee city in which he lives to install 33 solar panels on his house. Furthermore, he also upgraded his furnace, windows, light switches and heating system in his 70-year-old home. He also buys 100 percent of his energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane.
I agree I was disturbed when I read about Mr. Gore's apparent hypocrisy, but it turns out this isn't so. Mr. Obama on the other hand, needs to make a similar example (as do all other politicians who rightly support global warming reduction). However, now that Obama has secret service protection, his personal vehicle of choice really doesn't matter. Armored Black Chevy Suburbans the rest of the way...or until he drops out of the race.
More information about Gore's house can be found at the link below.

I bet in another few months you'll probably see Obama driving an Escape hybrid to show he "cares." He's not alone though. I know plenty of people like him that talk big about the environment and then do nothing about it. They have their heat set to 80 in the winter and drive to a friends house down the block. Al Gore had plenty of chances to install solar in his home, but he only did it when people called him out on it.

Obama's message: " Do what I say, Not what I Do! ".
Obama should just drive his Hemi and keep quiet wrt telling Anyone they should build "Fuel Efficient cars" until he actually does something useful for the cause he says he supports. And cylinder deactivation in a Hemi, while helpful, is an awfully small "something".
And glad to hear Al Gore's recent doings are in line with what HE is saying!

If he was owned an F-150 we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Ironic.
How dare you drive a family sedan in this day and age!!

I agree with noflash.
While the 300 with a hemi is not the most economical car out there, it's not exactly an H2 either. I wouldn't expect him to be driving a Prius around. I don't think a hemi 300 is a considerable cause for concern.

Obama, like most people, doesn't know the difference between fuel economy and fuel efficiency. Fuel efficiency is the measure of the conversion of chemical energy into mechanical work (an engine's primary function), in exactly the same way that the efficiency of a furnace, expressed as a percentage, is the measure of the degree that chemical energy is converted into heat (a furnace's primary function) . As far as spark ignition engines go, the Hemi is quite fuel efficient, better than many six and four cylinders. If the 300C's 'fuel economy' is not as good as other cars, it is because it is doing more work rolling down the road than those cars, either because of it's mass, frontal area, drag coefficient, tire rolling resistance, or drivetrain frictional losses. I have no problem with the government mandating greater fuel efficiency, because it aligns with my own social obligations, and to do otherwise is to be wasteful. However, to mandate 'fuel economy' beyond the point that is attainable by maximizing fuel efficiency and reducing drivetrain frictional losses is to dictate how much work I can do with my vehicle, and it is not the government's role to dictate how much work I can or should do.

Glad to see "the other side" of the Gore home energy use story.
He's been pilloried to no end by the right-wing media -- Glenn Beck, The Auto Prophet, and now Car & Driver -- Pat Bedard I assume?

Why would you not be allowed to install solar panels on your own roof? This is America!
