GM kicks butt in Edmunds survey

Edmunds.com just released their "Consumers' Most Wanted Vehicle Awards for 2007," and GM cleans ups with 13 first place finishes, with the GMC Acadia being named "Most Significant Vehicle."

So a big, hearty CONGRATS! goes out to the General. Well done, indeed!

Naturally GM's  "Maximum Bob" Lutz couldn't wait to get the story out, as his blog is here .

I'm laughing at the results of the survey after reading that the Chevrolet Cobalt is "Most Wanted".
The Cobalt is truly a terrible car with the only possible exception the SS.
Impreza, Elantra, Corolla, Focus, Mazda3, Lancer, Rabbit, Civic, Sentra are all far superior to the Chevrolet Crapbolt.

Well you can get a decently equipped Cobalt for UNDER 15K(the category it won in) vs. a Civic at that price. I've been shopping around for a cheap econo sedan and for under that price, it isn't too bad of a car. Although I am leaning towards a Kia Rio right now. Congrats to GM, when was the last time we saw that many GM cars on the list hm?

Have you driven a cobalt to truly back up that statement? I haven't, so I have no clue on how good the car really is, so thats why I won't comment on if its a terrible car or if its in fact a terrific car that some people tend to bash on. Oh and look at the category it's in. Many of the cars you stated weren't even competing against the cobalt, but in fact were competing in a higher price category. It was voted most wanted when compared to vehicles such as the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Scion xA, and others.

I've driven it. It wasn't bad at all, but I'd take a Versa or Fit over it, with the Versa being much more similar to it. The high-trim levels of Cobalt are definitely nicer than the Versa, but they compete against more expensive cars that are well, better. Two points:

1. I suspect the other cars in that category split the vote, giving the Cobalt the win.

2. $15k isn't a good cutoff anymore. Simple inflation means that bottom-rung subcompacts can cost a little more than that, overlapping with the bottom of the compact range, especially when those compacts are always on sale.

I'm a little surprised to see the S2000 listed as the best convertible under $35K. I guess that just goes to show that after 8 years of production with only minor changes, a car can stand the test of time.

I'm absolutely shocked about the Cobalt, though. With the exceptions of Kratas and Carlisimo, I've never heard anyone say anyting positive about it. I've ridden in one and I couldn't help but feel sorry for the owner. I haven't ridden in an '07 though.

Well as long as you don't have high expectations for something, you won't be disappointed right? ;) The Cobalt is a basic car, just don't expect a Camry-like ride or anything and most should be satisfied if that's what they're looking for. I remember my friend's family bought one in 05 or so when everyone was doing the huge incentives, I think they got their Cobalt for $9995? heh.

I have to say that I find it kind of funny that a Car Manufacturer is now breaking a news embargo put on by a Car News Website :)

Love it. The data is in and yet many still will not believe it. Must be rigged if you disagree.

Just playing devil's advocate here...

What if GM "encouraged" their employees (and those these people are in regular contact with) to vote for GM products in "attainable" categories? Perhaps we should do some IP address investigation, eh, Bob? :o)

Ah yes, nothing like a good old-fashioned conspiracy theory! :)

Kudos to GM.

It all comes down to the product. And let's face it - the new Lamdbas are a great product. They earned it, ditch the conspiracy theories at the door. This is a top notch 3.6l engine coupled to a 6 speed auto in a package with the most room in its class.

Cobalt won based on price, but not the Aura, which also gets a solid powertrain. CTS and Z06 are performance bargains. The pickups are holding their own against new pressures from the Tundra.

Not sure I agree with the STS or the XLR, but the rest of them earned those awards, and GM deserves a pat on the back.

A lot of us have said "it's the product" for a while now, and this is what happens when GM focuses on the product.

ateixeira, I'm a big fan of the Saturn Aura XR. I think it's a fantastic product.

Think about this though. How many people will actually get/consider/cross-shop that trim of the Aura model? Most will probably go after the 3.5 liter V6 with the 4AT. I'm guessing the same will apply to the new Chevrolet Malibu as well.
