Nissan Maxima Diesel for 2010

Nissan is the latest to announce that they've jumped aboard the "Diesel Express," by announcing that the Maxima will offer a diesel for 2010. No word yet as to size and power, but my guess, being that the Maxima is the maximum Nissan sedan, that it will be a V6 diesel, probably around 3.0L.

"The launch of the Maxima will mark the start of a broader diesel strategy in the United States," Carlos Ghosn, Nissan's CEO said, adding the company was studying diesel vehicles in other markets. "It is difficult to say which technologies will prove to be the most popular among consumers, and preferences vary from one world market to another...
... When a clear market trend emerges, we will be ready to offer customers what they want," stated Ghosn.

I did some research to see if Nissan had a diesel engine. As far as I can tell, they do not. They did build diesels back in the 80's and early 90's, but the last diesel they've made was back in '92. They're gonna have to dust off their skills if they want back in the market. I think 2010 is a reasonable timeline.

They make diesels for their pickups and SUVs sold in other markets. If you go to their Australian site (for example), you will see them offered. The newer versions are pretty high-tech too.

You know, that's the first place I should have checked. Wiki had nothing except a listing of SD engines. Y! turned up fruitless too.

Thanks for the info!

Touché drwales! I hadn't even thought about Renault. I could definately see Nissan using a Renault engine.

In fact, via some investigating, Nissan and Renault have already cobuilt a 2L dCi diesel engine, the M9R, which produces 150hp/250tq. There's also a high output model that produces 175hp/266tq. I doubt the first would make it in the Maxima, but the HO certainly could.

Im wondering if Honda will beat them to marker?

I think Honda has the advantage right now since they've already developed a clean diesel with no urea injection. I'd bet they'll come out at the same time.

What happened to the 4DSC that I had grown to love after owning three back to back!

There is also a STI diesel coming out 2010. HP version putting out 170-180hp. 0-60 in 7. http://66.160.188.111/Straightline/4356
With fuel hitting $4 for regular here in the bay area, diesel is the way to go. if we can get the performance AND the MPG why not. Remember Audi won the road race with a diesel.

All european and asian car manufacturers have diesels in fact most countries around the world do not use gasoline engines. gasoline it's cost prohibitive in most nations too expensive for the cost of living so that leaves those people with diesels
that said all european and asian manufacturers make excellent diesels and now with the addition of turbo fan to drive to.
