Be your own hybrid. That's right, you as a driver, have the ability to turn your car into a hybrid. Well, sort of...

According to this link , if you sit idling at a stop light for 10 seconds or more, you can turn your engine off and save gas...
If you're sitting at a light or in traffic for 2 minutes or more, the savings will be much higher (obviously). My question is what does all this turning your engine on and off do to your battery, starter, et al. over the course of time?

This isn't practical for diesels, by the way, nor until your gas-powered car is fully warmed up. Plus, if you use A/C, you might kill the battery and end up stalled in traffic.
 
There are times when you can do this, and in fact it's common in Europe, but it's not practical most of the time.
