2007 New York Auto Show: 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe

2008 Infiniti G37

Move over BMW 335i, the 2008 Infiniti G37 is looking to steal your thunder.

Longer, wider, yet shorter than the G35, the updated G37 coupe gets a 3.7-liter V6 engine that makes 330 horsepower compared to the BMW's 300-hp 3.0-liter. Although official numbers haven't yet been released, Infiniti says the new V6 is targeting a 40 percent improvement in emissions and a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy. The current G35 carries a 19/26 mpg EPA rating with a manual transmission...

The G37 also gets a much nicer interior package, and a solid list of options including a navigation system with XM NavTraffic real-time traffic, a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive, a rearview monitor and an 11-speaker Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose.

But forget the spec list. The G37 coupe could turn heads away from the BMW showroom on looks alone. — Kelly Toepke, Manager of Vehicle Testing

and in this corner... a contender to the BMW 3-series coupe... Be sure to check out Josh's test on this car... at least we know this car won't need a "limp home" function...

Is it just me, or is this car neither as pretty nor as stunning as the original?

roar, I am with you.

The new G sedan looks better than the old one inside and out but the new coupe only looks better inside. Maybe it's the angle but the butt looks really odd to me, almost like the car is about ready to fart...

Wow, that's bland looking. The e92 3 series is ugly but at least its ugliness has some presence. This...it just looks like a slightly melted G35.

roar: it's kind of like... a subtle evolution of the original design... neither good nor bad IMO. i think it retains the great lines of the first gen and is pretty striking but it's not that much of a "dynamic" design. i've heard comments that the front looks a little bulbous but... i'm not really seeing it that way. the rear is run-of-the-mill infiniti...

I like it. The old model was a tough act to follow.

I actually think they improved the front end a little, and stacked lights seem to be Infiniti's thing. The rear is not as successful but doesn't look bad.

With the nicer interior (looks like the M45's doesn't it?) and the bigger engine this thing will sell just fine.

I actually like this design but the 335 coupe (although not as stylish) still has.............."that look". Its timeless, classy and will STILL look good in 10 years.

I'm with Trackwerx on this. I truly do like this new coupé, but I'm still in love with the old one. The sedan looks so much better now, though.

You Bimmer fans better watch out. I always felt the sedan model was what was holding the G35 back from overtaking the 3-series. Now that's not the case.

loved the G35 Coupe, and the new G37 will only encourage my growing pashion for Infniti...even if that tail is slightly crook
looks as though the rear bumper is much to square in comparison to the rest of the car...otherwise amazing design...on par with the 3-Series coupem though the sedan is much better than a 3.

interior is fantastic, though slightly messy buttons around the screen...upgraded engine is also much appreciated, and comes with better fuel figures...maybe Infiniti should be showing GM how to achieve better fuel figures for its RWD brigade....

I own 2006 g35 sedan 6-sp manual. Very good car, in fact I bought it over BMW 330i. I have to admit that BMW 335i looks and drives great. I was waiting for g37 since next year planning to buy/lease a new car. BMW/Infiniti are top in their class but I have to say that I am quite dissapointed with G37. It is 100 ponds (at least) heavier than BMW 335i coupe, has less torque, and 54/46 f/r weight distribution (50/50 BMW). I personally like performance and care less about luxury and hi-tech toys (if I do I would go with MB or Acura). Infiniti needs to know if they want to beat the champion they have to be better than the champion (true in every sport too) that means: shed some weight, add torque (HP is not only number to pay attention to), improve weight distribution. It seems that Infiniti is happy with second place and does not want to do much (performance wise) to hurt BMW. Instead it took Acura/MB path and tries to add toys/luxury to compensate for lack of performance compare to BMW. Just to confirm that I DO drive Infiniti and bought it over BMW more than a year ago. I have not tested G37 but from tests and specs that I was able to put my hands on it looks that BMW 335i coupe will have bigger advantage in performance arena over Infiniti G37. For me it means that BMW 335i is my next car. But, this might be my biased opinion.

One reason the G's platform is so heavy is that it shares it with so many other vehicles. The G, M, FX, 350Z all use this platform.
Ive always wondered why a 350Z was MUCH heavier than a Corvette and this is why. Platform sharing is good financially but it comes with some compromises when it involves performance.

As far as the 3 vs G, I think the 3 will still retain its crown as the ultimate entry level sports sedan because of how everything meshes together flawlessly. This is an area where Infinti can vastly improve. If I had to choose between the 335 coupe and the G37 is probably take the 3.

I'd still take the G for the sake of reliability and looks (I think the 3's are looking bloated these days).
