Now that the launch of the updated 3 Series convertible is complete, BMW is turning its refresh efforts to its 2008 5 Series lineup.
Like the 3 Series upgrades, the 525i sedan becomes the 528i, producing 230 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. In turn, the 530i is moving up to the 535i with a twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The 550i keeps its 4.8-liter V8...
A six-speed manual transmission is standard for all 5 Series models, with the manual becoming an option for the 535i in September of this year. Additionally, a new E-shift automatic transmission is available as a no-cost option. A new optional Sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters replaces the SMG option this June.
Styling changes are subtle and include a revised lower airdam, new headlight lenses, and new rear LED lights.
Inside, updates are mostly ergonomic with larger door bins, a new shifter lever, and relocated window switches. iDrive novices will appreciate the six new programmable memory buttons which will help drivers avoid scrolling through numerous menus for common uses. An iPod/USB adapter has also been added so drivers can leave their iPods at home and play tunes through a USB stick instead.
Not a complete overhaul, but BMW enthusiasts will appreciate the refresh. — Kelly Toepke, Manager of Vehicle Testing

The cleared EDM-style (European Domestic Market) headlamps look great!
The U.S. DOT-mandated reflectors on the bumper a la the E92 3 Series Coupe on the other hand, don't look so great. :(
I guess you win some and lose some. Can't win 'em all!

Personally, I still think it's ugly. I'm not crazy about the electric shifter, either.

It's about the same weight as a 335i, expect pretty similar acceleration numbers.
Yet people claim the 3 series isn't overweight...lol

Do they have all the euro-market fuel economy improvements?
And where are the diesels?

What an ugly dashboard. Besides the strange shapes and lines everywhere (some functional, I know, like the hooded Nav area), there's an AWFUL lot of plain black plastic showing all over the place. GM must've referred their former interior folks to BMW..

I agree, the interior looks terrible, perhaps slightly worse than before (too busy, still unimaginative in design).
I do like the new lights on the exterior, though. The old yellow eye lashes made it look like Dame Edna from the front. The clear lashes are more subtle.
I hated the SMG so the E-shift is hopefully better. I'll take a 6 speed manual, any how.

i thought the previous 5 was kinda ugly, and even tho they didnt change much, i think it looks a little better. the interior could be better, tho, and i dont really like the eshift thing, either.

Previous 5 was a classy design. A previous 5 with the sport package still looks good from any angle as its sporty, dignified, and timeless. The "new" 5 isnt as timeless but still a good looker.

The 5 Series went from gorgeous (E39) to fugly (E60), the E60 v.2 doesn't improve things much as they still have the Dame Edna headlights.

I like the "light" refreshing of the 5 Series. The rear reflectors take away from smooth look at the rear, but since USDOT required it, there's nothing you can do about it. Front headlights look great, and it seems they are simplifying the interior, which is good. More tech gizmos keep it on par with Benz, Audi, Lexus, etc. Overall, pretty good. Don't forget, Bimmers are 'the ultimate driving machines!"
