Spy photos: 2008 Porsche 911 GT2

The roll out of the 997 series continues. This prototype of the 2008 Porsche 911 GT2 spotted during cold weather testing shows a few unique new body panels in addition to a set of serious looking brakes. Some of the more outlandish styling elements are probably nothing more than a little camouflage, but the deep front diffuser looks ready for production. Also note the roll cage bars behind the front seats. Given that the standard 911 Turbo is rated 480 horsepower, expect the GT2 to push beyond the 500 mark when it debuts later this year.

I like the floating turn signals, but that front air dam looks almost Audi-huge.
I'm not sure what I think about the gills on the rear end, but I say "yes!" to the integrated tailpipes.
What is with that wing!? It looks like a tumor.

The only problem with the GT2 is the inability to maintain exclusivity with its looks. A base 911 is just a body kit away from looking like the GT2. For the poseur who doesn't care, but wants the look, that's all that matters.

Wow...that's the first thing I have to say about the GT2- and all these comments about the looks. If you're planning on buying a GT2 and all you can think of is exclusivity you've got bigger problems. The GT2 isn't about exclusivity, it's about being able to drive unbelievably fast at the track and dust off all the exotics at the drag strip. The last GT2 was faster than the 911 turbo and more dialed in for track use than the GT3...the kind of car you could use a daily driver but wouldn't want to. But who knows? The new model will probably be equipped with PASM so there is the option of a cushier ride on the road...the last GT2 didn't have any form of traction control besides a mechanical limited-slip diff. It didn't have a back seat, either. But it did have the amenities the GT3 lacked (like AC). So like I said, if you're worried that it looks too much like a 911 Turbo, or a Carrera with a body kit, it's what's underneath that counts...and the outside still looks pretty fierce if you ask me.

I really don't like those wheels. The front and rear ones don't match, I realize the rears are wider but they look caved in.

The spoiler is also tacky.

Sure, it's functional, but it's also ugly. I doubt that's the only functional design they could have come up with.

I'll take a regular 911 turbo, with AWD.

To those of you complaining about the looks of this car and how similar it is to a Carrera or Turbo, what about the 996? or the 993? or the 964? All of the variants of each of those lines were, in essence, the same basic design with a few little changes every here and there...Spoilers, skirts, vents, fender flares...That's what distinguishes one Porsche 911 from another, not huge and total design changes. Also, those floating turn signals aren't new for Porsche, as they're on the 997 Turbo...I don't know why people are talking about them like they came out of nowhere.

Look at what this car is supposed to be...Exactly what previous GT2s have been: adapted, upgraded, re-tuned, RWD versions of the current 911 Turbo. That's precisely what this car is, and in my opinion, it does it fantastically.

I love this car. I will agree with others about the gills in the rear...they do look a bit awkward and unfinished, but I highly doubt what we're seeing here will make it into production.

I can't wait to see some reviews on this thing...
