Nissan Intelligent Transportation System Enters Next R&D Phase

Ever wish your car could let you know that you're about to be broadsided at the next intersection?  Dream of the day when traffic lights will adjust their timing based on pedestrians and the speed of approaching traffic?  Fear not, Nissan has your needs in mind - and the improvement of the environment as well.

Nissan recently announced they are moving into the next phase of R&D work on in-car systems designed to increase driving safety and reduce vehicle emissions by lowering traffic congestion.  Nissan's ITS research effort ties in with their environmentally-focused Green Program 2010 (AutoblogGreen has a nice writeup) and their Carwings telematics service.

See Gizmag for a description of the first phase of Nissan's ITS work.

I can't help but think of the law of unintended consquences. Plus, early version of these systems have been annoying enough that a lot of people turn things like lane departure warnings off.

I just want the smarter traffic signals. I swear the existing "dumb" signals hate me! "Oh look, here comes Brian, better turn red!"
