New Chevy Taxi Van Offers New Yorkers Greater Mobility

I mage: General Motors Photo/Emile Wamsteker

Commuter Jerome Kleckly disembarks a new Chevrolet Uplander taxi van using the vehicle's ramp outside Grand Central Station in New York, Thursday, March 29, 2007. The wheelchair accessible "lowered-floor" van is the first of its kind to be approved for taxi use in New York City. A stainless steel floor designed 12" lower than the standard floor allows 58" of headroom without a raised roof. The Chevrolet Uplander taxi van is ADA compliant and meets or exceeds all applicable U.S...
and Canadian vehicle safety standards. The vehicle will be on display at the New York International Auto Show next week.

Handicap taxis aren't a new thing, but this looks to be better than the cumbersome units out there now.

assessable ≠ accessible.

This is interesting... wonder what New York will do was the Uplander is discontinued?? Or will GM keep making a varient of the vehicle available only to fleets like it did with the Malibu classic?

No kidding, this van is probably out of production by now, if not it will be soon. The Lambda crossovers are taking over.
