Kimi Raikkonen Takes Formula 1 Season Opener

F1 Australian Grand Prix

In his shiny red Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen easily won the first F1 race of the 2007 season in Australia.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso finished second in his new McLaren. His rookie teammate Lewis Hamilton didn't have a bad day either, rounding out the third podium spot in his Formula 1 race debut.

The season is off to a very interesting start...

You guys might want to use a non-spoiler headline with results and details inside.

I'm worried that the 19,000rpm rev limit and the harder tires will help kill what's left of overtaking in F1. For a few years already, the major problem has been that the current aerodynamics packages ruin the airflow behind the car - the following car is slowed down more than sped up by the wake of the car in front. (The wake does seem to help at certain following distances, on straights, but in general it's made passing harder.)
By hardening the tires, the '07 regulations make aerodynamic grip even more significant than mechanical grip, so it's even harder to overcome that "dirty air." And last year, drivers who wanted to pass would increase their engines' revs temporarily up to 21,000rpm for a burst of extra passing speed. The FIA has banned that "to save money" (fewer blown engines) by cutting max revs to 19,000rpm, which the current engines can run on all day without problems. So they do - no more bursts of extra speed that help passing.

I'm too deep into F1 to quit watching but this could be a boring year. Oh and Honda sucks.

I like the fact that you post the result in the headline. As a news outlet you should be timely and up to date regarding race results.

And I'm sad to say, that Honda isn't living up to their potential as a factory team. How can Honda let Super Aguri beat them with last year's car? That's unacceptable! But I also put blame on driver choice. Get rid of Button. He's worthless as a driver.

My issue with posting results is that no one comes here expecting motorsports news, and F1 is often on in the middle of the night so few of us watch it live. I'd like to be able to keep reading Straightline before I watch the tape.

I understand your point. I'll be sensitive to the tapers next time.

I've never been a big fan of Button either and even less so Barrichello. But I'm a big Honda fan, so it makes it difficult to see them do so poorly.

Any early guesses as to who will take the next race?

I was actually there at Albert Park, in Melbourne, Australia to watch the race. I had a box seat so I got some great pictures. I even saw Lewis Hamilton in person as he was riding a scooter or something.

Anyway the race was exciting to watch as I had never watched a race live before, but it was a bit lame in the Raikonnen got off to such a great start that the others had no hope of catching him, and that made the race very predictable right from the start. I was rooting for Alonso, but at least he got 2nd. But I think the McLaren-Mercedes cars look much better than the Ferrari ones. After watching the race, I've decided I like NASCAR better as there are more crashes and it is less predictable.
