Jeep 4-door Wrangler a sales success

While other Chrysler products may be languishing at dealers, that can't be said of the new Jeep 4-door Wrangler. Most new vehicles sit on dealer lots for an average of 60 days; for the 4-door Wrangler, it's 20 days.

The other anti-CUV-SUV, the Toyota FJ Cruiser, is also selling at a very brisk pace. So while these vehicles don't score very highly with Consumer Reports or practical-minder buyers, they're clearly a hit with the public...

This must be true because I am starting to see several of these on the road - and they are the 4-door model. I was curious a couple weeks ago about them and so I stopped in at the dealer to look at one and they told me that the 2 they had on the lot were sold already and that they had another one coming in, but it too was sold.

The 4-door Wwrangler was a no brainer and I'm not surprised it's a huge hit. I think it'll be a quick seller for years to come.

I can't say the same about the FJ. I was really excited when I heard Toyota was going to bring it back, but the nostalgia has worn off on me, as I'm sure it will for others.

As a $20k REAR wheel drive with 4 doors and enough interior room to be practical for families, it is no wonder Wrangler Unlimited is a hit. The front seats are extremely comfortable without being oversized. It has ABS, ESP and full set of airbags standard. It can be ordered with a limited slip rear -- who needs 4WD? It is very well equipped for its base price. It has 6 speed manual transmission, which warms my heart.

AND IT IS A CONVERTIBLE!

As someone with 2 4runners (85 and 97), I hate to admit just how appealing this 4dr wrangler is. Serious 4wd with 4 doors and a removeable top? Sign me up.

Saw one with a hard top shell just last evening. They still look a bit odd to me though. Mainly because I'm so used to the proportions of all the previous Wranglers. It'll just take me a while to adjust I guess. And I can't disagree with the actual utility and practicality of this vehicle if you need to go somewhere off the road with more than one other person and their gear along either.

As an off-roader the 4-door is not nearly the equal of the 2-door model, as it has a wheelbase longer than any Jeep in history, save maybe the J-series pickups from years gone by.

A long wheelbase mean a worse break over angle and a much larger turning circle, neither of which are good attributes for a vehicle designed to go off road..

I'm not surprised at all. The local Jeep dealer had none in stock, can't get enough supply!

This appeals to me even though no other current Jeep does (except maybe the Patriot).

Jeep was smart, too, because they worked with the aftermarket, so there are already lift kits available for this beast. Several, actually. Extreme 4x4 on Spike TV modified one, in two stages.

I think what impresses me most is you can get a 6 cyl 4 door Wrangler for the same price as last years base 4 cyl TJ ($24,000 CDN).

The 2 door Wrangler is an amazing $5000 less then that!!!!

True Bob. But the main difference between this Jeep and other similarly sized competition is that the overall design of the Wrangler is better suited to deal with the knocks that come when driving off road. Short front and rear overhangs, for example, lead to MUCH better approach and departure angles. The fact that the bumpers aren't plastic that hang down low helps durability when things do rub a bit. And the breakover angle can't be as bad as most of the "trucks" that folks use off the beaten path either! ;-)
