2007 New York Auto Show: Hummer Power Plays

It looks like the Hummer H2 and H3 will be getting a serious power boost for 2008. The H2 Alpha will get a 6.2L V8 with a 6-speed tranny, an automatic 6-speed I'm assuming. It will also get a third row seat, and the rest of the interior has also been upgraded.

However, it's the H3 that really needed a power boost—and it's getting it, as in a 5.3L V8...
This will also be an "Alpha" model.

No word on non-Alpha models, so I'm assuming they will remain pretty much as is, power-wise at least.

With the new V8, the H3 should become wildly popular, especially in urban environments.

I bet the majority of sales will still be the base model.

I hope GM also gives it the 3.6l V6 as an option. The v6 is flex fuel and has about 270hp. That would make it a better choice as the I5 is killing it. Basing it off the colorado's platform was a great Idea,....

What was keeping me away from the H3 was the motor. But, like the FJ Cruiser, I'll rent one for a day to see if I'd actually like it. No offense but road testers' opinions and my own often differ...

I think the average Hummer H3 buyer will be interested in the V8. I bet the take rate is nearly half.

I can understand the desire for more "oomph" but a V-8 in an H3? Wasn't one of the points of the H3 to try to show that there could be a Hummer product that had somewhat passable fuel economy, at least for an SUV?

Unless there's been some big breakthrough in super-efficient V-8s that I haven't heard about, this seems silly.

This vehicle probably will sell, like it seems most Hummers do, to poseurs, players, and NBA-wannabes in crowded urban areas, areas where gas mileage will be dismal. This will, of course, keep fuel prices expensive. Great.

Being as this IS 2007 we're in, I would think that diesel or hybrid engines should be the big news with the H3 today, not "in a few years." Unless this is some magical gas V-8 that gets a consistent 25+MPG, then this news falls in the category of "bad" news.
